         <description><![CDATA[<div>-The General Assembly makes two kinds of laws.<br><br>- It has authority to pass general statutes (laws) that apply statewide.<br><br>- Also they can enact local or special laws that apply only to specific, or certain, counties and cities.<br><br>- General Assembly decides how much money can be spent and how state's expenses (state taxes as an example) will be paid.<br><br>- The reviews called legislative oversight- allow legislators to learn how well current laws are working and whether the laws need to be changed<br><br>- Impeachment- trials for North Carolina are rare.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Elections- districts are based on census (= population)<br>- the districts are equally divided <br>- 50 senates 120 house districts<br><br>Qualifications- <br>1. House- 21 years old, 1 year residency <br>2. Senate- 25 years old, 2 year residency, 1 year district residency <br><br>General Assembly Leadership-<br>Speaker of the House- the North Carolina House of Representatives elects a Speaker who presides over the house and makes key appointments.<br><br>President of the Senate- the lieutenant governor is also the president of the senate, and only vote to break ties.<br><br>Senate- elects a president pro tempore who is, in fact, the leader of the senate and makes all key appointments for the senate. <br><br><br>Legislative Sessions-<br>- long sessions= odd number years<br>- short sessions= even number years<br>- long session- 6 months <br>- short sessions- 6 weeks<br>- special sessions can be called out of nowhere by the governor, speaker of the house, and the president of the senate<br><br>Key Legislation- <br>- In 2005, the North Carolina education lottery was voted to be put into operation.<br>- In 2006, the new minimum wage was raised the hourly one dollar to $6.15.<br>- In 2016, the House bill 2 law, the bathroom law, was called The Public Facilities Privacy &amp; Security Act.</div>]]></description>
