Acceptance

Jeanette had weird and dangerous childhood and that was her parents fault. They had certain believes and they stuck to them no matter what. Even if their children were starving they wouldn't go on welfare. They wouldn't accept donations or help. Jeannette had to accept that her parents weren't like other parents and that she shouldn't be ashamed of them. When her uncle Stanley was touching her unaprialey her mother said to accept it and move on as if nothing happened

Mom pointed her chopsticks at me. "You see?" she said. "Right there. That's exactly what I'm saying. You're way too easily embarrassed. Your father and I are who we are. Accept it.

This quote shows that Rose Mary wants Jeannette to just accept them for who they are and that they aren't going to change who they are because someone doesn't like it.

The theme of broken promises is very obvious in the book. One big example is when they plan to build the glass castle, so they start digging the foundation and Rex decides to fill it up with trash instead. Another time this can been seen is when they started saving up for some time and they find out that Rex was the once who took the money and refused to admit it

"Never did build that Glass Castle." "No. But we had fun planning it."

This is when Rex got sick and the reminisce about how they never got to building the glass castle like he said he would but he still had fun planning it out with her

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a major theme in this book. Rex and Rose Mary treated their children horribly and didn't provide for them at all when they were growing up. Jeannette forgives them for all the bad stuff they let happen to them. Jeannette even builds her mother a house on her property so that she would have somewhere to live.

"Erma can't let go of her misery," Mom said. "It's all she knows." She added that you should never hate anyone, even your worst enemies. "Everyone has something good about them," she said. "You have to find the redeeming quality and love the person for that.

This quote shows Rose Mary is the type of person who would forgive easily and she is trying to pass that on to Jeannette.

Self Reliance can be seen all throughout the book. The Parents didn't take care of their children very well so they had to learn how to take care of themselves. They had to fight their own battles and find their own food. They had to save up enough money so that they could go out and live on their own.

“I figured he must be right, there was no other way to explain it.”

She forgives him for putting her through that because she knows he wouldn't do her any harm because he that isn't the type of person to do that.

Rex and Rose Mary do not conform to the social norms. They don't care if their jacket have any buttons or if people see them looking in the trash for their next meal. They are considered shelter resistant, which means that they don't like the rules placed on them by society. They would rather be out in the dessert that in a city with a stable job.

"You want to help me change my life?" Mom asked. "I'm fine. You're the one who needs help. Your values are all confused."

Rose Mary thinks that what she is doing is fine and that Jeannette should stop thinking bad about her

When he taught her how to swim he pushed her into the deep end let her swim for herself. He says that he would never let her drown and that he loves her.

"As awful as he could be, I always knew he loved me in a way no one else ever had."

In the end she knew that her father loved her and that she loved him no matter what happened.
