This can be seen in many ways during the movie, but I think the mothers' obsession with material goods versus Lester's new look on life illustrates it rather well.

Angela is also the typical american - believing, or at least wishing she'd be that special little snowflake that stands out from everybody else.

He's middle aged, has a bad temper and tends to collect some rather odd things.
He seems to have a lot of personal issues and it often prompts him to lash out at his son, Ricky.
He desperately tries to be the typical macho, no-emotions soldier type, but that facade is starting to crack, as he shows weakness when he's afraid his son is doing drugs again and especially when he believes his son to be gay.
He's very homophobic, but as is sometimes the case, that's because he's secretly insecure about his own sexuality.
