9. Does Bartleby have any lasting impact on the lawyer?

I think Bartleby does leave a lasting impact on the lawyer. The lawyer always has a constant battle in his head on what to do about Bartleby and begins to truly care about what happens to him. The lawyer tried to give Bartleby money so that he could take care of himself, and once Bartleby was imprisoned, the lawyer visited frequently to check on him. Bartleby changed the lawyers character. During Bartleby's time, he learned compassion and how to care for the needs of others from his once fiery demeanor.

1. How does the lawyers description of himself serve to characterize him? Why is it significant that he is a lawyer? Are his understandings and judgments about Bartleby and himself always sound?

He doesn't take much time to describe himself, other than the fact that he is old. This shows that he is more interested in the characters around him, and reflective upon his own life. Being a lawyer is significant to show that he knows right from wrong, and is capable of arguing or understanding someone else's situation if need be. His understandings of Bartleby is not always sound because he makes a lot of assumptions about who Bartleby is, but he doesn't really know, as none of that information is given to him.

8. What motivates Bartleby's behavior? Why do you think Melville withholds the information about the Dead Letter Office until the end of the story? Does this background adequately explain Bartleby?

I believe that what motivates Bartleby's behavior the most is his own internal feelings. It is apparent that Bartleby suffers from depression throughout the story, especially when the Dead Letter Office is brought up in the end. I think that Melville withheld the concept of the Dead Letter Office until the end to show that Bartleby has not always been suffering. The Dead Letter Office adds a somber aspect to the story which is needed to infer that Bartleby is suffering the mental illness. Yes, I truly believe Bartleby's job had an impact on his internal feelings. I would probably be sad too if I had to receive mail meant to belong to someone who had recently passed away.

Who is the antagonist?

The lawyer's view of Bartleby changes; however, he doesn't actually change much himself. At first the lawyer is pleased with Bartleby, but then slowly becomes very displeased. Bartleby changes drastically. He is originally a hard worker who does an excellent job, but slowly starts doing less and less. By the end he is an awful worker. The antagonist would be Bartleby.

In the beginning the lawyer thought that Bartleby was very strange because he never talked and every time he was ask to do something he would respond with "I would prefer not to", as the story goes on Bartleby was doing less and less work so the lawyer was getting frustrated with him so he fired Bartleby. After he fired Bartleby he responded with "I would prefer not to leave" and so he didn't. This resulted in Bartleby going to jail but the lawyer still felt
bad and went to visit him.

How might this info produce a provocative biographical approach to the story?

The story was written in 1853. Many say that Melville's success went from 1846-1850, meaning he wrote this on the downfall of his writing career. His third child, Elizabeth, had been born on May 22. The article was published in a two-part series in Putnam magazine in late summer, early fall. Melville wrote a total of 14 short tales that were put in either Putnam, or Harper's magazine. I also read somewhere the stories had not been super popular at the time because the literary complexity had been so far ahead of its time.
