Laughing at him, and now putting the town up to do the same. Joe Starks didn't know the words for all this, but he knew the feeling. Clearly, Joe Starks requires complete and total domination in order to feel a sense of control over his life. When this condition is not satisfied, he behaves extremely irrationally, going so far as to lash out at his wife over a perceived prejudice.
