Finding the Agenda in Visual Media by Sydnie Mccabe

Analyze the images from Hurricane Katrina by discussing your observations and making inferences. Evaluate the captions by using the critical perspective questions that follow. Cultural Criticism: How might issues of race, age, or power be at play?Feminist Criticism: What are some ways in which gender and gender rolesrepresented in the photos?Historical Criticism: What contemporary trends, conflicts, or developmentsmight provide important context for understanding the images today?Marxist Criticism: To what extent might questions of class be relevant for theviewer to consider?Agenda: What is the Agenda behind this image? Who is potentially benefiting from this image? Who is not?

You can tell by all the sweat on his back and the caption where it says "Bush calls for nation to prepare for a long term effort to rebuild New Orleans". Bush calling for the entire nation makes me believe he really cares. You could also criticize this in a historical lens. People's political views might cause conflict because he is the President.

Race could be at play since it is primarily a African American women who is photographed with her child and New Orleans is primarily African American raced. Gender roles are involved in the picture because the woman is fresh out the hospital, and you would think she would be one of the first people tended to since she's more vulnerable, but no. There's also a plethora of military men behind her who aren't offering to help which is also something standing out to me. I also think her class is something to consider because her being lower class, based on her attire, can influence what order she was evacuated in. If we were to talk about who benefited from this image, it definitely wouldn't be her because this exposes her in a moment of lowness instead of being helped or guided.

I think his location is important to understand how in depth this effected mass amounts of people. He wasn't even in Louisiana and still had his house torn down by the hurricane. He could also been seen as poor from this photo because he's still there thinking about what happened to his home when people with money would've simply probably found somewhere else to stay. I think the person benefiting from this image isn't him, but nobody in specific. More like it's being used to spread awareness.

The agenda is to emphasize how much this little boy has lost and show you how he is feeling about it. I would also say you can criticize this through a cultural lens. The captions tell us that the boy is "seven years old". Usually children his age would be very happy and not sad and stressed out.

The child's gaze conveys a mixture of exhaustion and confusion, typical in minors who have suffered a traumatic loss. This image allows an analysis from the perspective of childhood and poverty. Natural disasters affect everyone, but children are especially exposed to the emotional and physical effects of living among rubble, without a home, without school, without routine. Furthermore, it reflects how recovery was not the same for everyone: low-income families like Dillion's had to endure the trauma without much structural or psychological support.

It is an intense scene, with smoke, fire and toxic water, which summarizes the chaos experienced after the hurricane. This image lends itself to environmental and social criticism: there was not only destruction from wind and rain, but also from pollution caused by toxic waste and human waste in the water. Many of the affected people lived in vulnerable areas with weak infrastructure, which increased the impact of the disaster. The firefighter represents the human effort to help, but also highlights how the emergency system was not enough to address the magnitude of the problem.

The firefighter rescuing a man from toxic waters marginalizes that the most impacted were African American. Power failed to protect communities before, during and after the storm. In a feminist criticism, even though there is no women, a man is saving another man and usually (societal) its usually a man "needing" to save a woman. In historical criticism, the federal government delayed a response to Katrina which became an issue and poor communities were least to recover. The toxic waters show concerns of infrastructure, climate change and environmental racism. The agenda behind this image may be to evoke empathy, highlight heroism and document the cost of the disaster. It shows the bravery of firefighters.

Looking at this from a feminist perspective, it highlights the often-ignored challenges that women face during times of societal turmoil. Historically, this moment provides a heartfelt snapshot of American life during a major catastrophe, shining a light on how systems can frequently let down those who are most vulnerable. Additionally, when viewed through a Marxist lens, the image prompts us to think about the economic inequalities that worsen such crises. It clearly points out the pressing need for systemic changes that focus on fair distribution of resources and support for everyone, especially when they find themselves in urgent need.

The historical lens provides insights into the significance of this event within the broader context of American history, examining how such natural disasters have historically impacted marginalized communities. The Marxist lens encourages an exploration of socio-economic disparities that my be illuminated by Dillion's story, highlighting class struggles and the implications of wealth inequality in disaster recovery efforts. lastly, an agenda lens could dissect the political and social narratives constructed around the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, revealing the motivations and objectives that shape public perception and policy decisions.

When we look at the image through different cultural lenses, it opens the door to some intriguing interpretations. For instance, taking a historical lens allows us to reflect on why this event is so significant in American history; it really underlines how the federal government approaches disaster management and recovery efforts. Now, if we were to view it from a Marxist perspective, we might critique the socio-economic factors that come into play during the recovery process, shedding light on the class disparities that affect the communities hit the hardest by the hurricane.

From a cultural lens, one might explore how this image reflects societal values regarding bravery and community support in times of crisis. The historical lens provides context about the systemic issues that plague New Orleans, particularly in marginalized communities that often bear the brunt of such natural disasters. A feminist lens could address the gender dynamics of caregiving and heroism, considering who is portrayed as a savior in disaster scenarios. Moreover, a Marxist perspective might highlight the socio-economic inequalities highlighted by the disaster, raising questions about access to resources and safety in affluent versus impoverished neighborhoods. Lastly, analyzing the image through an agenda-driven lens invites examination of how the portrayal of heroes and victims can influence public perception and policy regarding disaster response and environmental policies, On the other hand, an agenda-driven analysis would center on how these powerful images and speeches can shape public perception, helping to create a specific narrative around disaster response that we often see in the media.
