I decided I wanted to learn German by the end of last year. My main motivation was I would like to work or have an experience abroad during or after my studies in Germany. In order to get extra motivation I travelled to Berlin in January. I really loved the city and it was great to be exposed to the language, although I didn't understand almost anything.

A few weeks ago I started to look for some material to watch or to listen. I think, considering my really basic level of German, it would be better something to watch, otherwise I will be frustrated due to inability to understand. Watching a TV series would also enable me to guess by seeing. I found a educational sitcom: extr@ auf Deutsch. Every episode lasts 20 minutes and I am watching two or three a week. The dialogues are quite simple and it is easy to understand even when I know almost nothing of German, but it is really fulfilling every time that I get a word, phrase or expression that I have recently learnt. I watch the series with German subtitles and it a great way to improve my listening skills, hear how different words are pronounced and learn new vocab by guessing according to the context.

Writing is a great way to put all things I have learned in German together. However, if you only write, you will not practice your speaking skills. A great technique to study a language consists firstly in writing a few paragraphs using all the grammar and vocabulary you have learned. Second, you read it aloud a few times. Then, you record yourself speaking about what you wrote. Finally, you listen to the recording and take notes about what you need to improve.
The following text and the attached video are an example of this method.
https://youtu.be/lPRN5hXQO84

Grammar and vocabulary have been the major focus in these two months of learning German. This allow to build a solid base, which in my opinion is the most important at the beginning. However, my experience with these two aspects of the German language have not been equally enjoyable. On one hand, learning grammar is being challenging, but also really fun. German has a structure completely different from Spanish or English. I have found interesting to see how my brain is getting used to this new structure and I believe it will also have extra benefits in the way how I think. On the other hand, expanding my vocabulary has been a little bit frustrating. I struggle with remembering new words and I have tried many techniques to learn vocabulary without success so far. To overcome this issue, I bought vocabulary flashcards. They will allow me to study new words when I have lunch or dinner.

Listening is my weakest skill when it comes to German. That is why I have put a lot of effort to work on that. Increasing the exposure to the language is crucial to improve my listening. One common way to achieve this is to listening to music or watch movies and series in German. I've started to watch Dogs of Berlin, a German TV series on Netflix. I still don't have a good enough level to understand it, and I watch it with subtitles in Spanish. However I pay much attention to every word and sounds.

I have been learning German for about two months. At the beginning I tried Duolingo, but since I have no knowledge of German, I didn't find it helpful at all. Two months after, I've given it another chance which has resulted in a better contribution to my German learning. In my opinion, the biggest problem of this app is the lack of explanation about grammar. I have some basic understanding of the German grammar, this is why Duolingo is being more useful this time. Particularly, to practice vocabulary and verbs conjugation.
