Stefan is questioning himself on wether the wall has been there or was rebuilt. Him questioning himself implies that he is still unsure of all the memories of his childhood.

Stefan looks at the wall and sees the old bricks. The ellipsis suggests that he is thinking and considering the state of the bricks, if they are actually old, and from when he was younger,or is he just making it up. 

"I retrace my steps to the railway bridge"
Stefan retraces his way back to the bridge, which shows that he is not sure of the way back, and is questioning himself on how much he remembers the Close 50 years after he left.
