My Bread Story: Grandma’s Milk Bread Magic

📅 When: December 2021, during the school holidays

Every year during the holidays, I visit my grandma’s house in Penang. But in 2021, something special happened — she finally taught me how to bake her famous Hokkaido milk bread. Soft, pillowy, and slightly sweet, it’s been my comfort food since I was little.

I’d always watched her from a distance, but this time, I got to knead the dough myself, wait patiently for it to rise, and brush the golden tops with egg wash. The smell that filled the kitchen was incredible — warm, sweet, and full of memories.

❤️ Why it was meaningful: It wasn’t just about baking. It was about bonding, learning a family tradition, and realizing that sometimes, the simplest things — like sharing fresh bread with someone you love — can be the most memorable.

Deliverable:

https://www.canva.com/design/DAGomDThIQk/St-d6ed7CXYSvdxgXmw27w/edit?utm_content=DAGomDThIQk&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link2&utm_source=sharebutton

My bread story: Milk Bread croissant

It was the June school holidays of 2021, a time when the world outside seemed quieter than usual, but our kitchen was full of life, laughter, and the comforting scent of flour and yeast. I remember waking up to the sound of my mother bustling in the kitchen.

“Want to try something new today?” she asked with a flour-dusted apron wrapped around her waist.

She held up a printout titled “Milk Bread Croissant Recipe” – a hybrid of soft Japanese milk bread and the classic buttery French pastry. It sounded magical, and in that moment, I was all in.

We gathered the ingredients like we were on a mini treasure hunt. Bread flour, milk, sugar, yeast, and of course, butter – lots of it. I stirred while she kneaded. She showed me how to fold the dough just right, her hands graceful with years of practice. Mine were clumsy, but she didn’t mind. She guided me patiently, every instruction wrapped in warmth.

Why was it meaningful: It was meaningful because it wasn’t just about baking. During that time, everything outside felt a bit uncertain and slow, but in the kitchen with my mum, we had fun, laughed, and worked together. It was a chance to spend quality time with her, away from screens and schoolwork, and to create something from scratch.

On 27 May 2025, our class had the unique opportunity to make Nutella and sausage buns together at school, turning an ordinary day into something truly memorable. The activity was not only fun and delicious but also meaningful because it allowed us to bond as classmates, work as a team, and learn basic baking skills in a hands-on way. As we mixed ingredients, shaped dough, and carefully filled each bun, we shared laughs and helped one another, creating a warm sense of community. The sweet aroma that filled the classroom symbolized more than just tasty snacks—it reflected the joy of collaboration and the value of learning through experience. This was our first time making bread from scratch, which made it even more exciting and memorable. At first, many of us were unsure of what to do, but with guidance and teamwork, we slowly got the hang of it. Feeling the soft dough in our hands and watching it rise was like witnessing a small transformation, and it gave us a new appreciation for the effort behind something we usually take for granted. Seeing the completed buns made us feel proud of the effort we put into making the buns . It was more than just a cooking session , it was a reminder that trying something new can lead to meaningful and joyful experiences.

Deliverable https://www.canva.com/design/DAGomGuAiew/tj7u60YqeePkD-6DeqPSuw/edit?ui=eyJEIjp7IlEiOnsiQSI6dHJ1ZX19LCJBIjp7fX0
