There are several factors like Geographical distance, economic, social disparities, gender bias , political will , administrative, religious, philosophical, ethnic , linguistic, and deep cultural devide among the global citizen. Participation is crucial and making a policy to suit every ine is indeed most challenging.
I have selected the picture to bring into perspective the sheer size and volume and complexity of the noble endeavour of bringing everyone in the same frame.

It can then create discussions about Education as a whole, what we can take from this pandemic and apply to our education system. As GCE incorporates social, economic, political, economic it is certainly a topic that challenge all these ideas.

I was looking around my house to find something that could express what we are talking about – the relationship between the local and the global – and my eyes were fixed on my “nativity scenes” collection. I decided it was it! It is interesting to think how a religious image was spread out, how it is interpreted and adapted in so many different places around the world. In the 1st picture we can see some examples coming from Africa, Latin America and Europe, using local materials like blackwood and ivory, rosewood, local fruits, seashells or clay. One was even inspired by the Russian matryoshkas. The one showed in detail, from Latin America, is a proof of the perfect syncretism (of global and local “spiritualities”) - it is a small box that opens: above we can see the nativity scene (a global scene in a local interpretation) and below we can see the local spirits. How beautiful!

The fact that sport can bring so many people together, people who do not even know each other, is wonderful. Global stars at the top of the game can inspire people in local communities located in hundreds of countries around the world. However, viewing this image with the current climate of top level football in mind, also serves as a harsh reminder that a powerful few can decide how many or how few local communities can be touched by the world's game.

This concept sees the local vs. global as a continuum and is an effort to bridge the gap between the two. This approach teaches simultaneously about personal, local, national and global identities, and acknowledges multiple levels of identities.

I took this photo of my facemask when I was showing my students in photography class something. I bought the mask from a cooperative that helps refugees based in Rome. The fabric has been brought by one of the tailors from their home country. I think this raises two interesting concepts on the local vs global. Perhaps the most obvious is how a disease can spread globally very easily these days based (presumably) on local actions. And how people are acting locally has a continued global impact. Also it brings to mind the movement of people and how they are perceived. The general perception of the gentleman who made my mask is likely far different to how I am received though I am also originally from Africa (South Africa).

I took this picture of the red sun a couple of weeks ago. I live in the south of Brazil, and as I write this a large part of our rainforest and other green areas are burning. It’s actually far from where I live – I’m not threatened by the fire itself – but the effects of this tragedy can be seen here, in this red sky, for example. And the effects unfortunately will go way beyond that scary image, as the fires will affect not only biodiversity as well as climate conditions here and elsewhere. Brazil is a huge country and our forests are important for the whole planet.

Since the fires we experienced in Australia this year, we as a Year 6 class investigated and delve deeper into Climate Change and how they are connected. The students felt helpless so we looked into ways that we could help. We searched different effects and causes of Climate change. We found that reducing our use of plastic, using a compost bin, using less electricity, riding/walking instead of driving were all changes that would reduce greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. They are small changes but we worked out that if we all changed and then encouraged our families and extended families we might just cause a ripple effect to a long-term and wider change within our community, state then hopefully country. Every small change is a change for the better- this statement was support by on the the previous articles as well, which is exactly what I was prompting to my class this year.

Pandemic is a GLOBAL issue that affects people in the smallest villages and towns everywhere in the world.

English, in the largest font, at the top, followed by Chinese and then Malay and finally Tamil. The ordering is interesting given that the island was under the rule of a Malay Sultan when the British East India Company arrived in the early 1800s, but now has a population whose ethnicity is 75% Chinese, 13% Malay, and 9% Indian. Distinctive cultural districts such as Little India, Chinatown and Kampong Glam now attract tourists from all over the world. It's a stark reminder that Global Learning is a natural consequent of the evolution of society. Pupils were shocked to discover "half of the products in our supermarket" include palm oil, the farming of which is stripping enormous sections of the world's forests. Often pupils had a secure but simple idea of how they could make local changes to respond to global issues: e.g. plastic waste is bad for the planet, so buy a reusable bottle, or choosing fairtrade products over cheaper alternatives because they knew of the inequality of profit. But in this case they realised that the issue wasn't something so simple - there wasn't a "right" decision to make in the supermarket: the whole system itself was creating the problem. It was a really eye-opening moment and the lack of a simple answer caused quite the discomfort in a few!

I arranged a local regular litter pick with the children at my school and they took great care of their local park, promising to ensure they use the litter bins provided in future. It was a wonderful exercise to promote the importance of caring for nature and taking rubbish home to recycle as much as possible. This led to a whole school project on Plastic in the Ocean and children learnt about how important recycling is and the impact not doing so, is having on the environment.

As they grow up, they will increase their social responsibility towards their environment, community and to the whole world. I include here a very well know english children's book - The tiger who came for tea - in its portuguese translation.

This picture is of a new(ish) comic superhero who is female. I posted this picture to represent how ingrained gender norms are across the globe. And how they shape our expectations of children and in turn, shape their behaviour, ambition and dreams, how they see and value themselves and others. Recently, one of my 4 year old students got very upset at the suggestion that girls can like superhero toys and boys can like (Disney's) Frozen toys. It went against everything she understood about her world and how to operate within it. Not reflecting on how we shape children's local lives based on their genders has very negative effects for all genders globally. Many countries and cultures have higher numbers of female homicide victims by a male spouse/partner, and higher numbers of male suicides - both are results of (amongst other factors) individuals living up to, or feeling like they're failing to live up to, what is expected of them as a 'woman' or 'man'. Making sure toys/cartoons/clothes/activities are based on children's individual tastes rather than a predetermined gender based selection will help build equality and promote empathy and compassion from local to global.

This photo can be used to encourage my students studying psychology to reflect on the country's healthcare system, e.g. the flaws in the system especially in terms of underpayment; and the benefits of government health packages for the citizens during this pandemic. It also encourages students to think about the psychological wellbeing of the frontliners, the issues of understaff in mental health profession in national healthcare, and the potential solutions that the government can take to increase the mental health workforce in the country.

I teach Spanish, music, philosophy and dance in two primary schools, where the ethnic makeup of the children is mostly white, from a wide range of mostly European backgrounds. Through these subjects we learn about global histories and learn from different cultures of the world, examine and critique national stereotypes; develop critical thinking skills and celebrate all the children's home cultures. This photo represents both the breadth of backgrounds in my classrooms, and the optimism I feel every day when we 'travel around the world' through our learning. I hope deeply that my students feel as connected to the world as I do when I teach them.

Peddy
