They thought refusing to play was a good strategy because many people watch the NBA, and when they decided not to play, some people have a problem for it. In this instance, it was a "Give us what we want, and then we'll do the same for you." So until there was a change the NBA refused to play. But also they shouldn't just change what was happening because they refused to play, but even outside of sports everything needs to be changed and fixed.
