If for say, Isabel had an IPhone available to her at the beginning of her journey, she wouldn't have had difficulty's going off course, going to the Bahama's instead of on the route to Miami, there final destination. Then the refugees also have Google Maps (etc.) to help them find the best route for them. Since then Josef would have been able to call/text his dad in the Cuban hospital. He could have warned Aaron Landeau to maybe ESCAPE the hospital but it may not have been successful. Isabel may have had better luck, because when they WANTED to go to Miami, they ended up at the Bahamas instead. They could have also used the compass to know WHY the sharks were there or if they were in their "habitats" or if they drifted afar. These are my reasons Tech would have helped these poor refugees.

In the past it would be very hard to get around on water and roads. the water would be even harder then on road because there are no sign to direct them like roads. For roads people can look at the sign for help to direct them to there new home or where the are heading to. For Isabel she had to go by boat. When she had to go by boat when the motor stop they drifted to the Bahamas at night. so I think it will be helpful to have a phone or any devices you have. same with Josef he would need it but he didn't need it for all time like Isabel would have need it longer.
