Hello! My name is Lauren Hammell and I am currently in my second year in Drexel's Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program. I graduated from Rutgers University with a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) in 2015. I began my career on a cardiac telemetry and stroke unit where I found my passion for cardiology. Today I work in the medical intensive care unit at Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills, NJ, which is a specialty center that focuses on cardiac, vascular and lung disease. In general, nurses and especially practitioners, are required to educate patients, their family members, and other medical staff. Understanding the neuroscience of learning allows me to adjust the manner in which I educate in order for my patients, their family members, and medical staff to effectively learn and comprehend the information being taught.

Heart failure is a chronic, progressive disease that effects 5.7 million adults and children in the United States alone. Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the demands of the body. In some cases, the heart is unable to completely fill and in other cases the heart is simply not strong enough to pump blood to the rest of the body. In either instance, heart failure is a condition that requires patients, their family members, and medical staff, to have a clear understanding of the disease process and how to manage heart failure. Typically, patients diagnosed with heart failure are taught about the disease process and management very briefly. The reality is that heart failure is the number one cause of hospital readmissions. Seemingly, patients and their family members are not completely comprehending this chronic disease process. Clearly, discharge education and a brief conversation at the bedside or in the office is not sufficient. Although there are heart failure support groups, none of these groups truly test the knowledge being taught. Moreover, many people are unable to attend heart failure support groups, workshops, or lectures due to lack of transportation or failing health. A four-week online course will be moderated by a registered nurse who either has a strong background in heart failure, critical care experience and/or telemetry. The course can help patients and their family members to learn about the disease process and management of heart failure from their own home or on the go. The course aims to provide patients with the education needed and will evaluate their understanding of heart failure utilizing technology and neuroscience learning.
