Task 1

Playing music

Instruments

When I was about 7 I had a teacher called Mr smith, (I know very interesting name) he was a nice guy and would go on to be the only teacher in primary that made me enjoy school. His lessons were so fun for me, he made songs about timetables on his guitar: how to use adjectives properly; the correct way to use punctuation etc. All information that would've gone completely over my head was so engraved in my memory, I remember brushing my teeth while singing the 4 times table and trying to put my shoes on while playing air guitar (I didn’t manage to get a shoe on). One day at the end school my mum was late to pick me up for one reason or another so it was just me in the classroom, I asked Mr smith if I could ever play the guitar that good too? He replied while smiling saying ‘anyone can do anything if given time and patience’ I smiled and said, ‘one day I’ll teach you’. Most people would think I was cocky or a show off but Mr smith just laughed and said, ‘I hope you do my mate’ and from that day I was hooked with music. I would attend guitar lessons in my school and would show off any improvement no matter how small it might have been. I loved my guitar; I used to bring it everywhere I went showing off to anyone I could (even strangers). I don't actually know the full reason I quit guitar, maybe it was the fact that I was falling behind in school so I had to get a tutor after school most days and would fall asleep right after until the next day but after about 3 months of playing the guitar I never picked it up again until about a month ago. I love the guitar and I don’t know how I could ever have quit playing it.

Keyboard

I started playing the keyboard about 3 weeks ago and it’s actually a lot of fun. It’s quite difficult for me to learn the chord progression but spending about half an hour a day playing it has been really helpful in improving by ability and improving my coordination skills for other instruments.

Favourite bands/artists

My favourite band is Weezer - I think weezer are perfectly imperfect. The sound is honestly amazing. I love the vocals over vocals and the melody of the guitar. I don’t think they have a single bad song or a song I would even think about skipping. The lyrics are so simple, yet they resonate with me. If the person reading this hasn’t listened to Weezer then I seriously recommend you go listen to them.

As for artist I'm really stuck between Paulo Nutini and Bakar for which ones my favourite artist. I think Paulo’s song writing is some of the most beautiful displays of song writing and has an absolutely astounding voice to accompany it. It’s a rough and passionate voice and listening to it with the bad mic quality on the ‘these streets’ album especially on the song ‘loving you’ is so perfect to me. He talks about the romance side of love and it’s executed so well, the song is like a story or a detailed account of the relationship between Paulo and the girl it’s written about. As for Bakar his lyrics aren’t crazy but his voice sounds like a summer night which is my favourite time and the track he sings on is always perfection. He doesn’t talk about how many girls he has or the money he has, rather how the girls in his life have helped him through tough times or how a girl has left him when he needed them most which I think is how more songs should be written.

Favourite songs

My favourite songs have to be Father and son by Cat stevens; Baby by Dijon; Free by Bakar; Loving you by Paulo Nutini and say it ain’t so by Weezer.

Father and son has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever created. The lyrics hit so hard and the voice he has is incredible. It reminds me a lot of my mums step dad who I used to kind of think of as my real dad. Any song that can make me flash back like that song can has to be in my favourites.

Baby by Dijon is all about a man reflecting on the relationship between him and his girlfriend now that he’s been blessed with a child. I just love the story of this song so it has to be one of my favourites.

Free by bakar is actually a very recent favourite of mine his voice in this is so good and the song itself is just so catchy I love it.

Loving you by paulo nutini is a song that will be one of my favourites forever. I spoke about it a bit previously but the mic quality on this song fits the song so well I personally think if this song was recorded now it would be lower on my favourites list.

Say it aint so by Weezer is just an amazing song. I can’t quite figure out why I love it so much but it’s just so good (along with any other Weezer song).

Gigs

I went to Finsbury Park to go watch Fontaines D.C and it was so good. The crowd were so responsive and the lighting was crazy. Even on the slower songs the crowd had such a high energy and it was honestly one of the best nights of my life.

Aspirations in music

As for my aspirations in music, I want to work as a music teacher in a college. My career path for a long time was decided for me, and I only really took control of what I actually want to do very recently and I'm so glad I did. I would want to work at a college teaching teenagers that are passionate about music like how I am. I do also want to make music on the side but just because I love to write lyrics and I find it fun to try put lyrics to what I’ve written.

How I’ll achieve this

I think I’ll achieve this by studying the course I’m doing now very hard then (provided I work hard enough) go to university to study music. I also want to take a gap year and maybe travel the world a bit before going to University. I think that can be achieved by working at a job nonstop of 3 years constantly saving money as I go.

The first song I want to speak about is the song Rewind by Paulo Nutini. I absolutely love this song; I think his voice and the guitar throughout the track is just amazing. This song starts as a calm track, you could imagine yourself listening to it whilst on a walk through natural or sat reflecting on past events on a train. As the track plays on the tone changes as it gets faster and the song becomes messier giving the impression that this song comes from Paulo's internal mind and as he thinks more about the relationship as a whole, he becomes angrier and more overwhelmed which is shown with the messier arrangement of the instruments and the dynamics of the track.

The next song is a song called ‘Is it a crime?’ by Montell Fish. This song is just incredible; it’s a perfect mix a R&B style of voice peered with a late-night rock style. The reverb in this song is one of the best examples of it used ever, it isn't over done or too little It’s a healthy balance and makes for a seriously good listen. The lyrics are simple and the repeated question of ‘Is it a crime’ really adds to more depth in the song and creates a feel of being under a bridge at 2am or a late night break up. The bridge which consists of just a guitar with reverb is so simple yet when the vocals and drums come through you see just how much that guitar mattered in the song. I think a lot of songs have very little substance and depth; I love any song that can make me feel and think more deeply about it.

(rough sketch)

For my first producer I want to talk about Tyler the creator. Tyler the creator is nothing short of a genius. His ability to create masterpiece levels of productions whilst having a clothing brand and writing a film is absolutely incredible. He is predominately known for his as he puts it 'Heavy ass drums with some pretty chords'. Although he says it so nonchalantly there is a lot of truth behind what he said. Songs like 'ARE WE STILL FRIENDS' and 'She' are perfect examples of what he refers to his producing style as. Tyler was mentored by Pharrell Williams for a bit of his early career as he noticed a special gift with Tyler and now in 2025 the world recognises the talent that Tyler has blessed to the music industry. Tyler is known for his playful personality but to be the legendary producer he is there must be times where he drops the act and gets serious. He holds a lot of responsibilities being a producer and especially one of that level. He has to be in charge of everyone in the studio and how the track sounds. If he believes the artist could have a better take he has to vocalise his opinion to ensure the best version is achieved.

The next producer I want to talk about is Pharrell Williams. Pharrell needs no introduction, he is also regularly regarded as one of the greatest producers of the modern age.

The role of a music producer is essential in the world of recorded music, acting as a bridge that connects all creative elements into a cohesive and expressive piece. Producers wear many hats, blending creativity with technical know-how as they collaborate with artists, engineers, and record labels on various projects. One of their key responsibilities is to guide the overall artistic vision of a song, making important decisions about its structure, instrumentation, and vocal arrangements. They often lend a helping hand during the songwriting process, suggesting tweaks to melodies, lyrics, or rhythms that can elevate a song's appeal, whether artistically or commercially.

In addition to shaping the sound, producers also handle the logistical side of things. They plan studio time, manage budgets, and ensure that everything stays on schedule, as detailed in reports from OIART and Prospects UK. In the studio, producers play an active role, capturing the essence of vocals and instruments, crafting recordings, selecting the best takes, and mixing and mastering the final tracks. Many music producers come from a performance background, often playing instruments themselves, and are skilled in using Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) to record, edit, and refine tracks.

Skills needed

Musical Knowledge

Critical Listening

Collaboration & Communication

Creativity & Vision

Problem Solving

Time Management & Organization

Business Awareness

Adaptabiliy

https://youtu.be/qkwISstQQVw?si=pERpm7ngtDR-ZqwM

https://youtu.be/PnahkJevp64?si=JjN_vTe4ylA2rnPg

Numerous renowned producers have made a significant impact on the music industry. Take Rick Rubin, for example; he's known for his minimalist approach and has worked across a wide range of genres with artists like Johnny Cash, Jay-Z, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Benny Blanco has crafted catchy pop hits for stars such as Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and Ed Sheeran, creating tunes that resonate with listeners of all ages.

a performer in the music industry is one who plays a piece or song, often through the manipulation of an instrument (which may include voice) or numerous other means. Performers represent the face and voice of music — they are the bridge between the music itself and its listeners.

Responsibilities of a Music Performer:

Expressing Emotion and Meaning Musicians playing a song colour the music with their own feelings and will to technique. Through voice or instrument, they communicate the mood, energy, and message of a work to an audience.

Delivering Live and Studio Performances They play music live (at concerts, at festivals or venues), and they appear in studio recordings. This takes technical ability, stage experience and often a lot of practice and preparation.

Collaborating with Others Performers commonly collaborate with other musicians, producers, composers and managers. Highlight is like harmonizing with your band mates or someone in an orchestra.

Learning and Rehearsing Music A performers work includes learning new material, training regularly and developing an indivisible relationship with the craft. This can include vocal, instrumental, choreography and stage presence rehearsals.

Engaging the Audience In order to realize its potential, that music has to connect with people — through charisma, energy, via storytelling something about the way we live today — and have impact. This relationship is an enormous part of a performer’s success.

Maintaining Vocal or Instrumental Health Since performing can be physically grueling, artists need to mind their voice or instrument, body and mental well-being. That includes preparing, staying in shape and dealing with performance anxiety.

Representing Their Brand or Image I’m not denying that as public figures, musicians (and everyone else in the entertainment business) are fair game for what happens in their personal lives. They embody a kind of image or identity that resonates with fans. They way they dress, who they speak to, what they post on social media and how many times a year we’ll see them in public are all part of the job

Stage manager

In the performance arts industry, stage manage is a background role and supporting function. A stage manager oversees that everything in live performance — be it a theatre show, concert or musical — is smooth and on time. Always the stage manager is at its very centre, acting as a point of communications between director and cast, between cast and crew, conveying everything to every department in technical backstage.

Leading light in the Performance Arts Industry

The stage manager helps organize scripts, schedules, contact lists, production meetings — and puts all these elements in place before rehearsals begin. He might also help the director find rehearsal space, and document blocking details (the actors’ movement around the stage) as well as scene shifts.

Running Rehearsal

During the rehearsals, the stage manager takes notes on cues, blocking of scenes, props and technical needs. He sees to it that the rehearsals get off to a good start and finish punctually, that everyone arrives on time, and that the cast and crew are kept strictly to their schedules.

Contract with other technical areas

All technical elements must be put in place on order by the stage manager: lighting, sound, costumes, set changes. He helps break down cues for lighting changes, sound effects, changes in music and scene changes.

Calling the Show

One of the most important jobs during the show is called "calling cues." The stage manager must tell the stage crew when to bring down the lights or raise them higher, when sound effects are to be played or the next lot of settings — the whole scene — is going to change. Always does he have to exactly follow the script and production schedule, sometime using a headset to talk live with backstage departments.

Keeping the Performance Up

After the show opens stable, the director normally retires to leave the stage manager to run it all; Confirming that each performance is the same as planned at first and handling any on-the-spot problem or last-minute technical trouble.

The safety of the cast and crew during rehearsals and performances is yet another role they have to take on for themselves. If an emergency occurs or there is some unexpected difficulty (such as a lost cue or costume malfunction), they address the matter fast and sure-footed.

The audio link above is my final submission for assignment one. This is my first ever go at Logic and I'm somewhat satisfied with the end result. I love the course and although I talk in lessons I have such a deep love for what I am studying. I think I'm coming along okay, It's been a big adjustment going from secondary - something that I hated to a college like this doing a course I love. The tutors have been very instructive and have been so helpful to people like me who have gone from zero knowledge about how to produce to a full track in around a month and a half. To break down the instrumentation, the melody for this track is a sample of the website Sample Focus, the drums is also a range of samples I then put into a drum kit and arranged a pattern to fit the melodies needs.
