They remained inactive for 20 years but resurfaced in the 1960s amidst civil rights activism, leading to violence in Black communities. President Lyndon B. Johnson condemned the Klan after the arrest of four innocent Black individuals linked to a white civil rights worker's murder in Alabama.

In 1921 race massacre that destroyed a thriving Black neighborhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, This racist violence wasn't limited to Tulsa. This act is known as the Red summer. Red Summer originally started in the fall of 1919's from April through November of that year. The Red Summer refers to the blood they shed.(white mods) Many white mobs would attack black communities in cities across the country. Killing thousands of African Americans.

On Sunday, July 27, 1919, thousands of Chicagoans sought relief from the brutal murder in Lake Michigan. Among them was Eugene Williams, a seventeen-year-old African American. When he and his friends drifted across an invisible line that divided the waters by race, a group of whites began throwing stones at them, one of which hit Williams, causing him to drown. After the police refused to arrest the white man who was responsible for his death. his murder was the spark that ignited it during what the Red Summer.
