The Yangtze River flows 6380km from its source, in a glacier, in the eastern part of the Tibetan Plateau. The Yangtze River flows through nine provinces and its basin covers 1,800,000 square km of land, taking up 18.8% of China.The river also has over 700 tributaries, its mouth is located in East China Sea, neighboring Shanghai. One third of China’s population lives in the Yangtze region, some of China's major cities surrounding its banks. The Yangtze River plays a major role in the economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts upon China.

The Yangtze River supports many Chinese through providing its social values.

The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric dam, approximately 2,309.5m length, responsible for producing 85TWh of China’s electricity. Although largely supporting China’s electricity production, the Three Gorges Dam is accountable for many problems on the Yangtze. The Three Gorges Dam, was developed on a fault line, increasing the risk of earthquakes, and since its construction, been responsible for landslides, water pollution and wiping out ecosystems. Although the Chinese government have acknowledged the urgent issues, they have not made any statements suggesting any immediate action other than suspending plans for more dams that could contribute to the issues.
