Yo, Airi, Evan, Megan: The brain goes through some biological changes every 11 years (more or less) and I have read that it completely changes during the teenage years. At 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, these kinds of changes have been observed but they are not as strong and also people have already been through change at 11, so it is less difficult.

After this change, young adults cannot understand facial expressions or tones of voice...in a way they are like babies trying to understand the world all over again. They think people are being mean when they are not and because of this confusion they get frustrated with adults very easily.

As a parent it can feel like their child does not love them or understand them any more...it is not true. With love and patience all teenagers become nice people again, the same as babies become nice children.

Mentally you change because you learn as you live. You make mistakes and learn from them.

I think it is a great thing to hang out with your family because they have a very big impact on how you grow up and change. You usually give your family your leftover time. Like when you are done hanging out with your friends and come home.

As we get older we do think about our old friends. I think about my old friends sometimes. It is sad that my old friends and I are not currently friends, but I understand that people change and do not always have the same things in common anymore, and I am happy with the friends I have now, so it worked out!

This one is a big one for me. I am ALWAYS on my phone (I know it's a terrible thing.) There are really interesting things on the internet and we have the internet at our fingertips now.

On your first two questions:

Because teens are on their way from being children to becoming adults, I think they try to act like adults to reassure themselves that they are developing in the right direction. Blocking little kids and hanging out with their friends probably makes them feel more grown up, even thought that may not actually be the case.

I would also guess that it's built into our biology to seek independence from our parents during our teen years. Otherwise, we'd have many more single adults that continue to live with their parents into middle age -- not a very pretty sight, and definitely not good for the long term survival of human kind. Unless we are willing to leave our parents (if not physically, to a certain extent emotionally) to start our own families, there wouldn't be many kids, and after a while there will be no more humans.

On your third question:

As Stephanie mentions, this is not just a teen thing. Child, teen, adult -- we all do it at some level. I think this is also built in biologically and is something we have at a very primitive level. For better or for worse, the way someone / something looks can be a good indicator of whether they are safe or dangerous, and in many cases it's probably best that we pay attention to our instincts -- for example if you are confronted by a growling wolf with sharp teeth, you can judge from the way that it looks that it's most probably dangerous and best that you get out of that situation as quickly as you can. The same instincts guide what we feel based on how someone / something looks. However, as moral beings, I believe we humans have the obligation to overcome such instincts and to condition ourselves to not "judge books by their covers." Not always easy, and is part of growing up -- that's probably why we see this kind of behaviors more in teenagers than in older adults.
