TOWN OF KASSANDRIA

Kassandria’s first name (until 1956) was Valta, (from the greek word valtos, which means swamp). In 1956, a decision of the Community Council of that time named it Kassandra (which is now the name of the whole peninsula). Since 1964 the town is called Kassandria, named by the king Kassandros of Macedonia (358 b.C. or 350 b.C. – 297 b.C.) a heir of Alexander the Great.

It is an old large village, built almost in the middle of the middle part of the Kassandra peninsula. Kassandria has 3,500 inhabitants, but during the summer period with its settlements becomes a large city of 25,000 inhabitants and it is the reference center for the Cassandra peninsula. It is one of the oldest municipalities in the prefecture of Chalkidiki, which has its appearance as a settlement from the 16th century, built by King Kassandros of Macedonia at that time on the isthmus of Kassandra.

http://kassandra-halkidiki.gr/kassandria-siviri.html

KASSANDRA PENINSULA, HALKIDIKI

In the Northwest corner of the Aegean sea predominates the peninsula of Halkidiki, with its size and morphology. It occupies the area: south of Lake Koronia and Volvi, east of Thermaikos gulf and west of Strymonikos bay. The southern end is formed with three separate, smaller peninsulas: Kassandra (ancient Pallini or Flegra) in the west, Sithonia in the middle and Athos (ancient Coast or Athos) in the east, with three respectively capes the Kanastraio, Drepano (ancient Derris or vines) and Akrathos (ancient Nymfeo or Akrathos).
The Kassandra peninsula has a triangular shape. Possidi cape is the apex of the triangle, while the shores of Toroneos Gulf, 45 km. form the base. The west side, a length of 28 km., are the shores of the Thermaikos Gulf, while the south side, length 33 km., are the coasts of the North Sea. The canal (isthmus) of Potidea, at the northern end, separates Kassandra from the trunk of Halkidiki, so that it seems like an island .
http://kassandra-halkidiki.gr/
