This is probably because my students come from outside out Canada. My students don't always live with their parents and if they do it often means one parent is back in their old country while the other parent remains here with them. 
I strive to make my students feel like they are at home when they are in my classroom. I want every student to feel that school is a safe place. 
I want students to know that their home language and country is just as important as learning English or living in Canada. 
I want every student to know that by coming to this school we are not changing their culture but adding to it. Students have helped me write "welcome" on the door in their own language. 

I also have a banner that is strung across the entire room reminding students that "we all smile in the same language". I always remind my students that even though we speak different languages we all have much to learn from each other and we need to be kind and caring. 

I also feel strongly about celebrating our diversity. Last year this map had string pointing to all the different cities (and countries) that my students lived in (I need to add this in again because my students loved it last year).

In a weeks time you will see that my students will be helping me create decorations for both Chinese and Korean New Year. 

My students have placed their country flags on my wall and I keep them there all year long.

We learn well together this way as we can hear each others ideas and questions. We can see each other and no one's ideas can be seen as more important.

We do this based on our hand so it is easy to remember.

Middle Finger: Be respectful and kid to each other. No rude or inconsiderate talk. 
Ring Finger: Be committed to each other and to your own learning.
Pinky Finger: It is ok to ask for help! You do not have to do this on your own.
