Answer: In medieval Europe, artists were called 'artisans' or 'craftspeople.' These artisans did not create their own work, they worked for someone else. Their low status was reflected by the trade association where they belonged. Sculptures belonged to masons' group. After the work was done, the artists were not given that much credit and money. However, during the Renaissance, artists' status changed dramatically.  Humanists realized that if artists created such beautiful objects of ancient Greece and Rome, they must have rare skill. This change boosted confidence in the artisans. Artisans started calling themselves artists. They started taking credit by signing their creations. They started charging reasonable fees. Some artists took freedom to change or ignore directions of those who hired them. This started an era of high status and confidence of artists. Painters and sculptures started inserting themselves in their work, important people commissioned portraits of themselves. Artists started using realism in art, using formula that gave the image perception like 3D. Techniques like perspective gained more attention. Painters gave more attention to natural world than churches and religious settings. Paintings started looking lively and more like the world around them.
