She , her sister Truus , and a friend named Hannie Schaft would all ambush and kill The Nazis and their collaborators. Freddie and her sister grew up in Harlem with a working - class mother , who always taught them the importance of fighting injustice. These acts were actually very dangerous because if the Nazi had caught them , they may have been killed but luckily both girls looked young so officials didn’t necessarily suspect them. In 1941 a commander with the Harlem renaissance Group visited their house to ask their mother if he could recruit Freddie and Truus , the mother consented but only later on were they told what they'd actually be doing ,which was sabotaging bridges and railroads and learning to shoot Nazis. The sisters began to go on assassination missions by themselves and later on focused on killing collaborators who endangered Jews. Both sisters shot to kill but never revealed how many they assassinated.
