  • On that day, May 16, 1942 we departed for an unknown destination 
  • The Japanese race is an enemy race they said 
  • All Japanese, whether citizens or not, (should) be placed in inland concentration camps they said 
  • The Pacific Coast is officially a combat zone and some part of it may at any moment be a battlefield they said 
  • And nobody ought to be on a battlefield who has no good reason for being there they said 
  • But… 
  • I am a loyal American, yet I have the face of an enemy 
  • So maybe I wasn’t considered an American anymore. 
  • Of one thing I was sure, 
  • So much we left behind but the most valuable thing I lost was my freedom

    Packed in one large building,
    No beds were provided, 
    Had to sleep on sacks filled with straw,

    They remove us to concentration camps, all packed into one large building. 
    We are United States Citizens, but they give us no fair trial. 
    Our constitutional rights are but a meaningless phrase.
