18: The TV Show

Joanna Gaines gets a call from a lady named Katie Neff asking her and her husband Chip if they would want to be on a TV show. They agreed and a camera crew was sent to Waco, Texas where they live to film a "sizzle reel". They describe the first time trying to act to sell this TV show awful and horrible.

"Chip and I were horrible. We were scared of the cameras, which is hilarious because Chip is the most talkative guy I know" (xi).

19: The Start of Reality TV

Chip and Joanna act like their true selves on the last day, when Chip shows Joanna the house boat he bought sight unseen. Joanna is mad at first but at the end of the day she is kind of excited to fix it up. At the end of the day the head cameraman told them they have probably landed themselves a TV show. A few months later they recieve the news that HGTV wants them to do a show and that they are perfect for the channel.

"...until HGTV decided we were just what they wanted" (xv).

1: The Day They Met

Joanna was working at her dad's auto shop when a handsome man comes in. Her guy friends tell her to go talk to him and she finally agrees. She goes to talk to him but gets scared and runs out the door laughing. Chip asks her whats so funny and they start a conversation from there.

2: Being a Step Ahead

Chip has always been fearless when things got complicated, he seemed as if nothing could stop him. His fearlessness led him to be doing things in his 20's that other people weren't doing. Before Chip had graduated college he was already a step ahead he knew how to bank, negotiate, sell, etc. He was the kind of person that was a step ahead of his peers and friends.

3: The Proposal💍

Chip takes Joanna to Archer City and pulls up to a little shopping center, and around to the back side. They go into an unmarked hallway and Chip gets down on one knee and says "I want to spend the rest of my life with you" (Chip Gaines, 22). Joanna was shocked and finally says yes, Joanna knocks on a door in the hallway and opens it to see a man welcoming her to his jewelry shop. Chip had arranged for her to pick out a custom ring and diamond from Billy, a friend that's a jeweler.

4: The Wedding⛪💍

Chip and Joanna Gaines got married on May 31, 2003 in their hometown Waco, Texas. They were married in the Earle Harrison House, which is a historical mansion in Waco, it has grand pillars and a beautiful garden. They chose that location because of its park-like setting with the beautiful garden filled with roses. They wanted a beautiful classic and timeless wedding, they didn't want to impress people they just wanted a wedding that they loved for a cheaper price. Their wedding was filled with their closest friends and family, they also had some of their family as bridesmaids and groomsmen.

5: The first design 🖌

Joanna's first time designing a home was their little yellow house. It was her first time designing something and doing something like designing. They knew what needed to be done such as new paint, carpet, and refinishing the hardwoods. She decided that she wanted to make every room a different theme. For the front room she did a nautical theme, the kitchen was French inspired, their bedroom was hotel inspired, and the back room was Chip inspired. She made every room individual to the others.

"I had never done anything design-related at that point, but there was something very liberating about starting from scratch" (Joanna Gaines, 41).

6: Figuring out what she wants to do

Joanna Gaines describes that something shifted in her, and that she started owning who she was, when she was in New York. She also said that she realized she's unique, and God had a unique purpose for her. Joanna had spent her whole life worrying about how people had thought about her and whether she was good enough. She was thinking about what she should be doing instead of digging down to figure out what she wanted to do. Joanna is good at following the rules, at least for most of the time. When she was in New York alone, she realized that her faith was something personal. She wondered if she had given up on TV news too soon or if she should move back to New York. But she decided to stay in Waco.

7: Looking for a Building

Joanna's ideas came to life after she had remodeled and designed their little yellow house. She showed Chip some of her ideas and sketches for a little home decor shop. She told him "someday" and he said "why not right now". He said to her "Go drive around and find a building you like, and let's do it" (Chip Gaines, 45). So she did, she drove around Waco looking for a building that she could turn into her shop.

8: Getting the Building🏠

Joanna found a little building on Bosque Boulevard that looked abandoned and that she loved. She did some research and she made an offer for as much as she could at $45,000. The lady says "Oh my. I've already had two offers for considerably more than that" (48). She tells her that it's too low and declines her offer. Joanna wasn't ready to give up on that building yet so she prays that night that if it's meant to be it will be. Maebelle calls Joanna and tells her that God is telling her she needs to sell the building to her for $45,000. So Joanna gets the building she has been dreaming and praying about.

9: Naming the Shop

Chip and Joanna had decided together that the shop was going to be named Magnolia. Joanna has always loved Magnolia trees and their blooms. She describes that Magnolia's have somehow been a part of them, from being in their wedding, to having Magnolia trees in the front yard of their first home. The name Magnolia fits their business and the feeling they try to create. Joanna struggled with the sign, so Chip gathered up some old metal letters he found at a flea market, and put them up on the front of the shop spelling Magnolia. The letters were uneven and a bit old but Joanna loved it, because Chip has made it.

"I kept drawing things out, trying to come up with the word Magnolia in different ways, using the flower itself in a logo of sorts, and it just never felt right to me" (54).

10: Opening the Shop

Joanna opened her shop in October of 2005, when it was finally ready to go. She hand painted the open sign, didn't do any advertising or marketing. She said "It was just bad" (55). They told plenty of people they knew, and their parents had spread the word, but she was just hoping people would see it as they drove by and decide to stop by. She had a section of fresh flowers along with her home decor items. She says that "I wanted to create that same feeling in Waco, Texas that I had experienced in New York City" (55). Just after 10 am when she opened, people started to arrive.

11: Finding out their Pregnant

Chip and Joanna receive the news that they are pregnant, just as they settled into their little white house, and her store was just getting off the ground. The thought of having a baby filled her with inspiration. The tiny bedroom in the little white house needed a complete makeover to make way for the new nursery. Thinking about it gave her an idea that gave her a new perspective. In the little white house she had made all the rooms the same theme unlike the previous yellow house. They found out they were having a boy, and she decided to do earthy tones for the room.

"I had made the decor in our second house more cohesive than the ones in the yellow house. The colors were continuous, and the rooms all tied together rather than each space having its own theme" (63).

12: "The Boys"

Chip and Joanna were building the new house, working on flipping some small homes, managing rentals, and working the shop. Chip was building the new house, flipping the small homes, and managing the rentals, so he put a crew of working men together. They called them "The Boys", they were talented and hardworking guys who adapted to their ideas so easily. Joanna describes them as being adaptable, and asking no questions but just doing it. Between all of them they re-demoed and redecorated for new clients. Joanna ran the store all by herself the first year, but loved every minute of it.

"I could truly say, 'Hey, why don't we take that tree out of the front yard and hang it upside down in the master bedroom,' and they would do it no questions asked" (65).

13: Welcoming their first child

Chip and Joanna Gaines welcomed their baby boy named Drake. Drake was named after the Drake Hotel in New York where they had stayed on their honeymoon.

"Sure enough, two weeks early, I delivered a beautiful, healthy baby boy that we named Drake" (69).

14: Chip goes to Jail

Just after Chip and Joanna had welcomed their baby boy Drake, a warrant was out for Joanna's arrest. The county police came to their house looking for Joanna and Chip tells them that she is not home. Chip and Jo call the court asking for an appointment to discuss the tickets they had. The court switched the tickets into Chip's name and the sheriff arrested him. Joanna quickly went an emptied her cash out from her shop, and paid the money to bail Chip out.

15: Building their new home

In the end of 2005, Chip came across the opportunity to buy some land up the road from where they lived. Joanna had been saving up money since the jail incident, and paid all of her $5,000 to buy the land. Together they designed a 1600 square foot house from the ground up. Jo loved designing the home from the beginning stages. She learned that new homes don't come with oak floors, thick trim, and built-in character. Also she learned that adding character is expensive. She realized she had to get creative if she wanted the house to be unique and special. They wanted rock but could only afford enough for the front, so they added large trees to add attention. In 2006, they moved into their new house.

16: Magnolia Homes and a Baby Girl

Chip's house building company became their company and they named it Magnolia Homes. Then they soon found out they were pregnant with their second child, a baby girl, who they named Ella Rose. When Jo was pregnant with Ella she says she heard a voice saying to her "Jo, it's time to stay home with your babies" (80). In March of 2006 they sold everything and closed down the shop.

17: Renovating Castle Heights

Chip and Joanna stumbled onto a house in Castle Heights, they bought it and did quick renovations on it. The impression of the house was instant, the neighbors couldn't believe how good the exterior had looked after a few months. They did things right and quality work and people were amazed. People loved Jo's work, they would go to their open houses just to talk to them. People would ask them if they could remodel their bedrooms and kitchens. The more time she spent in her old house in Castle Heights designing, the more that notion sank into her heart and showed itself in her work. The Castle Heights house focused her on the classic design more.

20: Reopening the Shop

In May of 2014, just after the first season of Fixer Upper started airing, Jo reopened her little shop on Bosque Boulevard. She heard the voice again telling her to reopen the shop while on vacation with Chip in Scottsdale, Arizona. When she reopened the shop regular customers she had before came back, but so did new ones because of Fixer Upper. They opened an online version of Magnolia Market so out-of-town friends and family could shop, without having to come to the shop. They decided they needed to move the Shop because so many people were coming and buying stuff online too. In October of 2015, they opened Magnolia Market at the Silos, and thousands of people have been going ever since.
