There were 5 classes, the peninsulares, creoles, mestizos, mulattos and slaves. The peninsulares and creoles had the wealth, power and land in Latin America but the creoles could not hold political office. Through out many Latin American countries creoles led the Independence acts becuase they had been educated in Europe and were exposed to the Enlightenment and ideas. They were upset from Napoleon's decison of making his brother Joseph the king of Spain, so the creoles used Locke's ideas to rebel against Spain.
