Less than 3% of YEFC (youth who have experienced foster care) and who have emancipated out of the system receive a college degree, compared to 24% of the entire population (Walsh, 2021).

Even more, SEFC were less than half as likely to obtain a degree in six years compared to low income and first-generation students (12% vs. 28%) (Okpych & Courtney, 2018)

Approximately 30,000 SEFC emancipate out of the foster care system each year (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Children's Bureau, 2010).

For SEFC who emancipate out of the system, a college degree is often one of the only safety nets they have available.

The current literature indicates grades are lower for SEFC nationally, but does not address why (Watt, Norton & Jones, 2013).

I plan to address this in my thesis and understand the experience of SEFC in their academics.
