In China, English is taught as a compulsory subject starting from the third grade. However, in my focal class, half of the students have been sent to English cram school once or twice a week since they were in kindergarten, but only 30 percent of students demonstrate their English proficiency. Specifically, they know the alphabet, phonics, and numbers. Also, they have a good command of basic daily life nouns, adjectives, and verbs, such as girl and boy, cat and dog, small and big, play and eat, etc.

Students’ parents have at least middle-school English proficiency, so they are able to support students’ English learning. They always help students read the articles in the book, do the vocabulary dictation, and check the exercise book in the evenings or on weekends.
