The puritans thought of themselves as doing God's work of creating a community of only the purest and those who are not sinners. Satan was thought to be always out to get the puritans and whatever hardships they faced was the work of him. Anybody who didn't conform with the ways of the puritans was considered to be working for the Devil and therefore, a sinner and they were to be killed. Witches were thought to be employed by the Devil to disturb the peace trying to be created and when accused of being a witch, your life was over and there was no coming back. It was started from the puritans fear of the death and the fear of black magic or witchcraft. Trials for witch hunts were never fair and when accused of being a witch, you never recovered. You were shamed and often killed if you denied it, the only chance of staying alive would be confessing and living with the terms of being separated from the community. It's believed that some witchcraft accusations were used just to settle old feuds, cure boredom, or just to cover up for your own issues and to blame them on someone else. It was the thought that everyone is born a sinner, but some are born saved or not able to be saved at all. From birth, you are considered a sinner and as you go through life, you must work to be saved and be sent to heaven. Although, there are some people who are born on the path of going to heaven and some are born on the path of going to hell. It was never something determined by physical appearance or by positions in the community, it was always a mystery to the people.
