In the article above, it described the strategies to use towards a strengths-based approach to school counseling. Just like in the ASCA it also discussed what school counselors do on a social, career, and academic level. After reading this article, I was not very surprised that a strength based approach to school counseling was successful. As many do not like talking to a counselor to begin with, making it more positive in the beginning can help build a rapport with the student. Keeping it all positive and minimal with the negativity, it can be easier for the student to open up.

1. Spread Kindness- You never know what someone is going through so saying something kind like giving a compliment can go along way.

2. I can do anything I set my mind to- Life is not easy and if you want something bad enough you will go for it even if their are obstacles in the way. Everyone deserves a chance to fulfill their dreams and age should never play a factor into that.

3. I am reliable- I show up to work and school. I make sure to try and give my all especially through the hard times.

4. All things must past- throughout my life, their have been challenges that were hard to face but I realized as I got older everything is temporary so whatever you and I are feeling will go away shortly and will pass. Keep moving and keep your head high.

School Counselor Competency

After finishing the school counselor competency assessment I realized the areas of improvement for me include, Behaviors: Professional Foundation, Demonstrate understanding of educational systems, legal issues, policies, research, and trends in education, and demonstrate understanding of the impact of cultural, social, and environmental influences on students success and opportunities. I say this because I am fairly new to the counseling field and it will take some time for me to gain an understanding of the legal issues and policies, etc. As for the impact of cultures, etc I want to learn techniques and ways to make sure everyone feels included and deserves the same amount of respect and success. Next, the areas I did well on were, mindsets, direct and indirect student services, and planning and assessment. I feel these are my strong suit when it comes to counseling and will excel in. What surprised me with the results was that I did well on planning and assessment. I did not think I would because of what all goes into it.

I am surprised by that because I have been in the developmental disability field for over 10 years and are more drawn to people with disabilities than not.

Mental health and Substance Abuse is huge in America. Especially ever since Covid happened. Many individuals are getting diagnosed with mental health disorders and using drugs. It has not been a problem for only a few years but for decades. I feel it is just getting worse and worse.
