A Hopeful Moment on Race

"Even a black president, perhaps especially a black president, could not untangle racism’s Gordian knot on the body politic."
I entirely agree with this quote from the "A Hopeful Moment on Race" article. One president does not have the power, nor time, to eliminate racism. Racism has developed over centuries, and to completely remove or extinguish it from the body politic, a person would need more than the maximum 8 years of presidency. This would be especially difficult for a black president due to the excessive amounts of pressure and high expectations. For example, Obama got a majority of his votes from those who were victims of racial discrimination. They believed that Obama could help to "untangle racism's Gordian knot on the body politic." Although this was one of his goals, he just did not have the ability to simply eliminate racism. Many of his voters were faced with profound disappointment due to Obama's inability to live up to their expectations.

“White House Counsel Neil Eggleston said that Obama has commuted the sentences of more people than the past five presidents combined and that “we expect that the president will grant more commutations and pardons to deserving individuals in his final year in office.”
This quote from "Crime, Justice, and Race" reveals to us a part of Barack Obama's personality and character. Not only does it show us that Obama is forgiving and believes in second chances, but it also shows that he is not afraid to do what he believes is right. He recognized that some of the prisoners did not deserve the punishments that they received, usually due to being colored, and because he had the ability to do something about it, he commuted more than 300 sentences. This quote wasn't especially surprising because Obama himself is colored, therefore, he would feel the desire to help those who were treated unfairly because of their race.

“What could more profoundly vindicate the idea of America than plain and humble people — unsung, the downtrodden, the dreamers not of high station, not born to wealth or privilege, not of one religious tradition but many — coming together to shape their country’s course?"
Obama's quote shows the reality of America. Not everyone is powerful and wealthy, therefore they should not be the ones to shape our future. The idea of America is ordinary people working together to create a path for the greater good. America is exceptional because it is imperfect. Not everyone has to be wealthy and powerful for America to thrive and be successful. “Plain and humble people” have the power to come together to carve the course of America.

“Even some of those willing to acknowledge their racial animus toward the president say that the opposition is driven by ideological or political differences, not race."
I find it interesting that many people used political differences as an excuse for the race-based hostility towards Barack Obama. Though they claim that their racial animus towards the president is solely based on how they feel about his decisions and beliefs, their hostility was usually due to his race. I believe that his race should not affect how others feel about him, and his presidency. It shouldn't change the way that people see him, and definitely should not influence his decisions. Obama had to deal with racial discrimination throughout his presidency.

Obama passed a bill that included major improvements to the nation’s education system, large spending on clean energy, and significant expansions of antipoverty programs. Obama also conducted the Dodd-Frank Act that became a crackdown on Wall Street’s power. He used executive actions to protect roughly 6 million illegal immigrants from deportation. He also opened opportunities for gay and lesbian service in the military, hiked the top income tax rate, and cut out excessive private sector involvement in student loans. Obama also worked to modify the National Labor Relations Board, the Department of Justice, and the Wage and Hour Division of Labor Department.

Many presidents have attempted, and failed to achieve national health insurance. President Lyndon Johnson was able establish Medicare and Medicaid, but both programs only targeted limited groups. On March 23, 2010, Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law. From them on, it became the United States government’s responsibility to provide health insurance to nearly all Americans. This program expanded Medicaid and offered hundreds of billions of dollars in insurance subsidies to do so. The Affordable Care Act hiked taxes on the wealthy’s investment income and health plans. Obama established one of the most progressive laws America has ever enacted.

Osama Bin Laden was the leader of al Qaeda and was responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent men, women, and children. On September 11, 2001, Osama Bin Laden organized terrorist attack against the United States. He killed nearly 3,000 citizens as the Twin Towers collapsed to the ground. Shortly after taking office, President Obama made capturing Bin Laden the top priority of war against al Qaeda. On May 2, 2011, Obama authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden. On that day, Osama was killed and was brought to justice.

His secretary of state met with Rouhani’s foreign minister for weeks at a time to construct a deal. This lead to a historic accord with Iran that would stop Iran from developing a nuclear device for at least 10 years. This deal terminates the chance of a war between the United States and Iran in the future.

Cuba:
On March 20, President Obama and his family traveled to Havana, Cuba in his continued efforts to engage and empower the Cuban people.
