Did you know?

The word 'mummy' comes from the Persian word 'mummia,' which was a black, tarlike substance now called Bitumen. Bitumen may have been used in making mummies at one time.

Did you know?

Egyptians believed the gods weighed the hearts of dead people. If the heart was heavy with sin, the monster Ammut ate it. The person's soul was then not allowed into the afterlife.

A pyramid is a building with a distinctive shape. The word pyramid comes from ancient greek. In greek the word pyramides meant wheat cakes, which the world now changed to the word pyramid. Pyramids were buildings for dead pharaohs so they are practically graves. People built pyramids before their pharaoh died. Building a pyramid was a huge task, it needed a great deal of planning and work. After a pharaoh died his body would be mummified and put in his pyramid because people in ancient Egypt believed that after someone died their body would travel to the afterlife. Most pyramids were built in the period called the Old Kingdom which was about 2686-2181 BC. Pyramids were supposed to be sealed forever but tomb robbers dug their way in and stole all the goods and treasures.

Pyramids By : Miles Kelly

Real-life mummies have never risen from the dead to hurt the living. Instead, they're simply dead bodies that have been preserved. Their skin stays on the body, so they don't turn into bony skeletons.

For thousands of years, humans have learnt secrets of preserving the dead. In about 3000 BC, ancient Egyptians began wrapping bodies in cloth coated with resin to preserve them. Other cultures embalmed their dead and are still doing so today.

Not all mummies are made by people. Bodies sometimes become mummies naturally, especially in very dry or cold climates. Scientists nicknamed one famous natural mummy 'Ginger' because of his red hair. Ginger was buried in a shallow grave more than 5,000 years ago near Gebelein, Egypt. The hot desert sands sucked up the moisture from his body. It was then protected from flesh-eating bacteria that needed water to grow.

No place is more famous for its mummies than ancient Egypt. Egyptians learned about the natural process of mummy making by watching bodies dry in the hot desert. They perfected the process and turned it into an art form.

Ancient Egyptians believed people who had led good lives on Earth went to a perfect afterlife called Yaru. The body needed to be preserved to provide shelter for the soul after death.

Embalmers offered several levels of mummification. Only the wealthy could afford the most elaborate forms.

Egyptians believed that everyone had a soul known as Ba and an invisible person called Ka. They believed that when someone died their Ba and Ka would get released from his body and lived on in the tomb. It was believed that mummies would travel to the afterlife on a boat. In the earlier days people just buried people in the sand with food for the afterlife. Then the graves got more complicated and they started building pyramids. So the bodies got exposed to the dampness and bacteria of the pyramid and decayed. It was believed that after a pharaoh died he would become a god.

In the olden days in ancient Egypt, people were buried in the sand and not in pyramids the sand the sand dried up the bodies. Then things got more complicated and the dead were buried in pyramids. Due to the pyramid's damp air and bacteria the mummies decayed, but the dead buried in the sand stayed in better condition.

It took seventy days for the embalmers to prepare a body and they did it next to the body's pyramid. The embalmers first took out the inner organs then they removed the brain through the dean person's nostrils using a metal hook. Next they made a slit in the person's body and took out their liver, lungs, stomach and then their intestines. Each of the organs were embalmed in a chemical natron. Then they were put in their own canopic jar. The heart was left alone. After that, small bundles of natron wrapped up in linen were stuffed into the body. The outside of the body was also covered with natron too. Then the chemicals dried up the body like sand. After forty days the natron packs were removed. Then the body was cleaned with oils, ointments, spices, and resin. Then the eye sockets were plugged in with linen. The nostrils were stuffed with beeswax. After that the embalming cut was sewn together, and the mummy was wrapped in linen and taken to the pyramid to be burried.

A myth about the god-king Osiris inspired the Egyptians to mummify their dead. The legend says that wise King Osiris brought agriculture and civilisation to his people. But his younger brother, Seth, was jealous of Osiris' success.

One day Seth drowned Osiris and scattered his body parts throughout Egypt. Osiris' wife, Isis, searched until she found the parts. Then she asked the god Anubis to help preserve his body. Using magic, she brought Osiris back to life. He went on to become the god of the underworld. Souls had to pass through this dark, dangerous area on their way to Yaru.

There was a pharaoh called Tutankhamun who died at a early age. His pyramid was founded by Howard Carter. Since Tutankhamun died at a early age his pyramid was small because there wasn't enough time to make it the proper pharaoh size. Tutankhamun became king at the age of nine. He was the second son of Akhenaten a great pharaoh. Tutankhamun's pyramid had lots of luxurious boats and paintings.
