Sandra Day O’Connor: Sandra Day O’Connor became the first woman to work as a U.S. Supreme Court justice. Her biggest case was the Planned Parenthood v., which passed the right to get an abortion. 

The Cold War: In 1985, Mikhailb Gorbachev was the last leader to rise to power in the Soviet Union. He was known for his policies of glasnost (“openness”) and perestroika (“restructuring”). The Iran-Contra Affair was a political scandal in 1986 where Senior officials were illegally selling arms to Iran in return for the release of several U.S. hostages and hopefully funding to the Contras in Nicaragua. This occurred during Reagan’s second term which tarnished his image and undermined the effectiveness of his administration. 

George H.W. Bush: In 1988, George H.W. Bush was elected the 41st president of the United States. He was known for military operations that were conducted in Panama and the Persian Gulf and his involvement on foreign affairs. 

The Berlin Wall: In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. This marked the falling of the Iron Curtain and the beginning of the end of the Cold War.
