Some important figures in America in the 1940s were president FDR and Truman. Eisenhower acted as famous general during the 1940s and was elected president in 1953. The first steps in establishing peace across the lands had already been set in place before the war ended with Yalta and Potsdam Conferences of 1945. Soviets had created an “Iron Curtain” buffering themselves from Western Europe with the use of satellite states.

(Joanna Bernard)
In the first image it shows the Columbine shooting from 1999. This shooting scared many parents and students alike, as it was the first school shooting. Unfortunately not many federal gun control laws have been placed since then. Although 14 states have implanted the “Red-Flag'' law to remove threats to their campuses from those who carry firearms. The second image features the first photo taken of Mars by Mars Global Surveyor. This photo was taken in July 1997. Mars pathfinder came shortly after Global Surveyor. Mars pathfinder carried Sojourner which released the first interplanetary rover. The rover achieved collecting information about the rocks and dust chemical makeup on Mars. The third image presents the extinct species Rotund rocksnail. The Rotund rocksnail went extinct in 1990. In August 1998, 675 plant species and 468 animal species were put on either the threatened or endangered species list. There were many recovery plans set up to protect animals endangered. Such as breeding programs, protecting habitat areas, reintroducing species to habitats, and protecting species from hunters. According to my research a mere 11 of them were safe enough to be taken off the list. The fourth image shows a tank from the Gulf War. The US launched Operation Desert Storm to evict the Iraqi forces from Kuwait. The conflict lasted 42 days with the Iraqi forces being forced to retreat after suffering heavy casualties. The fifth image reveals a result of the Rwawanda genocide. Hutu vs. Tutsi conflict leads to over 800000 Tutsi killed. Hutu takes over the entire country quickly and havoc ensues. Over 2 million refugees fled (mostly Hutu). Originally the Hutu were the minority and felt oppressed and as soon as the president was killed the Hutu took it upon themselves to blame Tutsis and create genocide. The sixth and final image reveals the World Wide Web (WWW). In the 1990s the WWW was one of the most popular ways to use the internet. In the 1990s less than half of all American households owned computers, but it was slowly gaining traction. On July 3, 1977, the first magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam on a live human patient was performed. MRI, which identifies atoms by how they behave in a magnetic field, has become an extremely useful non-invasive method for imagining internal bodily structures and diagnosing disease. Sputnik 1 successfully launched and entered Earth's orbit. Thus, began the space age. The successful launch shocked the world, giving the former Soviet Union the distinction of putting the first human-made object into space. the floppy disk made it possible to easily load software and updates onto mainframe computers the first space mission to put people on the Moon, was launched on July 16, 1969. This isn’t all a bad thing though because without this hurricane the government wouldn’t have the amount of restrictions and safety guidelines it has today.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zvg6b6q1s-Y

The Western Art Movement was arguably the first modern art movement. “Western Art” is the portrayal, in two or three dimensions, of the history, people, landscape and wildlife of the area confined to the western regions of North America, in a highly realistic or realistic impressionist style and is inextricably linked to the culture of the American West. The Jackson 5 are an American pop band composed of members of the Jackson family. The group was founded in 1964 in Gary, Indiana, by Joe Jackson, as well as by brothers Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine, with younger brothers Marlon and Michael joining soon after. The movie Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley. In the film, a man-eating great white shark attacks beachgoers at a summer resort town, prompting police chief Martin Brody to hunt it with the help of a marine biologist and a professional shark hunter. Murray Hamilton plays the mayor, and Lorraine Gary portrays Brody's wife. The screenplay is credited to Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actor-writer Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the script during principal photography. The preschool educational television program Sesame Street was first aired on public television stations on November 10, 1969, and reached its 52nd season in 2021. In 1970, there were only 2490 television systems in the United States, serving 4.5 million subscribers. By the end of the decade, the number of systems had risen to 4,150 and the number of subscribers to 15.5 million.

Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement:
The Movement was a huge turning point for African Americans, as it provided a glimmer of hope for their long-overdue equal rights. One of the most powerful activists was Martin Luther King Jr. King made sure that the protests he organized were peaceful and nonviolent, and paved the way for the Civil Rights Act of 1964, effectively giving African Americans their proper rights and recognition.
John F. Kennedy and the Cuban Missle Crisis:
As the 35th President of the United States, JFK was under a lot of pressure by the Soviets. In Cuba, a Soviet nuclear arsenal had been put facing directly toward the U.S. To counteract this, JFK ordered a naval blockade of Cuba, and the failed Bay of Pigs invasion. After ending the Missle Crisis, JFK was assasinated in 1963 during a motorcade in Houston, Texas.
The Vietnam War:
During the sixties, America was on a mission to contain the spread of communism throughout Europe and Asia. As a further measure to contain communism, The United States invaded Vietnam. However, they did not know what they were up against. The guerilla warfare of the Viet Cong, led by Ho Chi Minh, outsmarted the superior American firepower in almost every way. After twenty long years of fighting, the U.S withdrawed from Vietnam in 1973.
Woodstock:
The musical Woodstock Festival attracted many people of the “Hippie” culture, an easygoing, love-lots group of people. Many bands played there, including Santana and Quill.
Apollo 11 and the Space Race:
During the sixties, the United States was “fighting” the Soviet Union not just on earth, but in space as well. After the launch of Sputnik, the Americans were concerned. President John F. Kennedy gave his iconic speech with the line, “We choose to go to the moon, not because it is easy, but because it is hard.” Finally, after many attempts and calculations, the Apollo 11 Mission with Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, and Neil Armstrong, successfully touched down on the moon, marking an important time in American history.

The 90’s was the ultimate surge of new technology, pop culture, movies and many celebrities that are still known today. At the home life, people began using home offices due to the new technology and applications. Many of today’s celebrities began to be known such as Tyra Banks, The Kardashians, Jennifer Aniston, and Britney Spears. Along with new celebrities, more racial issues began to rise such as the OJ Simpson case. Orenthal James Simpson was put on trial for the murder of his ex wife Nicole Brown Simpson.

During much of the 1990’s the U.S. had enjoyed one of the longest and strongest economic books ever. The Stock Market values reached all-time highs. Economic problems in the rest of the world can affect the American economy is because the U.S. has Allie’s with other countries, and did business with them. The gulf war began on August 2, 1990, military troops from Iraq invaded and occupied neighboring Kuwait. Military forces from the U.S. and other members of the UN gathered in Saudi Arabia and the gulf region. Iraq still did not leave, the U.S. and the other countries launched aid and ground attacks called “Operation Desert Storm.” The air attacks began January 17, 1991. The U.S. and its Allie’s, wanted to be sure Iraq would not invade nearby Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Arabian or Persian Gulf. Unemployment remained low and prices did not increase much. On the other hand, Educators, parents, and businesses helped schools get equipment such as televisions, VCR’s, video cameras, and computers which they needed to do the basic things in school during the 90s. In 1994 only about 3% of these classrooms had access to the internet which progressively increase by 1998 by almost 50%. In some states educators could’ve started independent public schools, called charter schools, to give students and families more choices. Click this link to watch a video about the economic BOOM during the 1990’s: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=video&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwi_0Junvtb3AhVBneAKHbM_A80QtwJ6BAgDEAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dqc3rXJAjI5w&usg=AOvVaw2EYLwiZx2vkkZPKiqtYNv9

During much of the 1990s the United States has enjoyed one of the longest and strongest economic booms ever; An economic boom means the economy is growing. Unemployment has remained low and prices have not increased much. When people “invest” in a “stock” they are buying a small piece, or “share”, of a corporation. In the 1990s, stock market values reached all-time highs. One reason economic problems in the rest of the world can affect the American economy is because the U.S. does business with other countries. Unemployment, inflation, and interest rates in the U.S. remain low. Some schools required uniforms In order to improve discipline and help kids focus on learning. Teachers used a variety of approaches, including hands-on activities, collaborating projects, and individualized assignments to help their students learn. Longer, healthier lives allowed many older Americans to continue working past the traditional retirement age which was 65. Many Americans above the age of 65 launched second or third careers.
