  • forma base in –are fanno parte della prima coniugazione;
  • forma base in –ere fanno parte della seconda coniugazione;
  • forma base in –ire fanno parte della terza coniugazione;
Quindi il verbo assumerà desinenze diverse a seconda della coniugazione a cui appartiene.

I verbi che seguono il modello delle tre coniugazioni si dicono regolari cioè conservano immutata la radice cambiando la desinenza propria della coniugazione di appartenenza:

Io cant–o,  tu cant– i, egli cant– a, noi cant–eremo ecc.

I verbi che si discostano da tale modello sono detti irregolari (andare).
