This job requires a bachelor's degree in one of the following majors: finance, economics, accounting, business, mathematics, or even law. However, once hired, I would enter on-the-job training under the supervision of senior advisers. Also, having different certifications such as a CFP (certified financial planner), a CFA (chartered financial analyst), a ChFC (chartered financial consultant), or a RIA (registered investment advisor) may help advance my career as a personal financial advisor. College will take at least 4 years, but the certifications will take at least 12 months, but most likely more since I would have to get hired and guided around the job, first. For me, I am thinking about going to North Georgia College to study finance. On average, I will spend about $5,460/year on tuition and fees, and for the entire four years of college, my total will be $21,840. I will spend about $10,440 for a total of $41,760 for a four-year degree. Also, I will spend about $6,696 on other miscellaneous expenses with adds up to $26,784 for all four years. My grand total for my bachelor's degree will be $90,384.

At an entry-level position, I would be considered a trainee in a junior position. This typically lasts for one year after your bachelor's degree is completed and you are hired. The entry level salary is about $41,160. Next, I would become a financial planner which is a longer lasting position; some people stay at this level for the rest of their career, but after at least ten years, after you have become CFP-accredited with a salary of $90,530, some become a senior financial planner. After creating a large collection of clients, people may decide to expand their business and start their own office, and in this new position, the average salary for an advanced level pay is about $208,000.

Three transferable skills when dealing with people that you need to have includes being adaptable, honest, and creative.
1. A personal financial advisor needs to be adaptable because no matter the plans, clients always have things come up; also, they have to depend on the economy, and it is forever changing and is never completely reliable or consistent.
2. Being honest is a very important characteristic for a personal financial advisor because when dealing with clients, I will need to tell them the truth about their finances. Otherwise, their finances would not survive or prosper.
3. Creativity is an important part of this job because it requires innovative ways of thinking in order to develop solutions to the different unexpected problems that come up.

The work hours may include late nights and/or weekends, and if I have a family to take care of, the schedule is not the most ideal, but if my clients are only able to meet on Saturday, that is what I will have to do.
3. Getting a license to establish myself in the job can take a long time.
