Standing Man is one of Pistoletto's 'mirror paintings'. They often depict figures turned away from the viewer, installed on reflective surfaces using techniques common in 1960s advertising. In these works, the artist highlights how a mediated image can reflect reality (through the realistic depiction of the man) and how reality can be abstracted into a mediated image (through our reflections in the mirror). The mirror allows each viewer to momentarily become part of the artwork, uniting time that passes for us with time that stands still for the man.
