A global citizen is someone that has an international mind, wherever they are. A global citizen can be placed in different parts of the world and be a good citizen, respecting their context, while also being assertive of their own experiences. A global citizen thinks outside the box by erasing borders, reaching out globally when learning, working, etc.

Biology is an ideal subject for to highlight both diversity and also how things are the fundamentally connected and similar regardless of social context. Also scientist around the world contribute to the collective knowledge in the syllabus. A school a prepare the students for global citizenship highlighting by introducing debate or awareness about these topics, and also by highlighting the practical work the lead to the knowledge. In my school, there is an ongoing project that can be shared with other classes, and also with the community around the school.

First of all, the textbooks we have are in English, while we are living in a spanish speaking country. In general, the quantity of knowledge available outside of our native language is vast, and realizing this is paramount. However, we also have access to seeing how science is conducted within our context (where resources are more limited), leading us to understand the different ways in which different countries can contribute to our general knowledge. Learning about the applications of biology, also leads us to understand the culture. For example, how do different cultures address similar problems or implement solutions.

I can help students understand the importance of international understanding by highlighting examples from different countries. Another way would be to promote learning through different resources from different countries. The best method would be to introduce them to different scientist from around the world, from different cultures or circumstances from them, whenever possible.

I have encouraged students to share their experiences in different countries whenever they relate to the topic at hand.
Another activity would be to add some historical context to key findings in the syllabus.
Another activity is to debate some of the issues such as climate change, GM food, or others that can help them dissect the different perspectives.
