I have become fascinated with sound walking and listening  throughout my studies the past couple of years and for my final project I am creating an Aural Biography of Place for a Croft my family have lived on since the Highland Clearances in the 19th century. 

Through walking, listening, recording, exploring material culture, mapping and gathering oral histories I am attempting to uncover the many sounds one place may have experienced over time.  I am also interested in the sounds of places the former inhabitants of the croft visited or relocated to.

While researching I discovered one of my ancestors and former inhabitants of the croft, Hughina Ferguson, emigrated to Vancouver in 1898 and spent the rest of her life there.  I have been wondering how Hughina's transition from a hi-fi sonic environment of the countryside to what may have been a more low-fi sonic environment of a city may have impacted her. Perhaps this change had no impact at all or perhaps she carried the memories of the sounds of home with her while she was there and the memories of the sounds of the city with her when she visited home, I guess we'll never know. 

Although we can't go back in time and find the exact sounds Hughina may have heard in either location I would love to make a comparison of the locations as they are today. 

If any keen soundwalkers, listeners, artists, researchers, etc in Vancouver would be happy to share some sounds of the city with me I'd be delighted to hear from you.  

Hughina lived at 613 Prior Street and 865 East 23rd Avenue so a 2-3 minute recording of sound from nearby either of these locations would be great, or anywhere close to the neighbourhoods.
