Meet the Park Ave Puppets! (1/25/24 Kenzie)

We are the Park Ave Puppets! Our members are Hailey, Julia, Gabby, Maddie, and Kenzie. We are all ECE majors! Hailey is a junior from the King of Prussia area. Julia is a senior from Medford, New Jersey with a minor in SPLED. Gabby is a sophomore from Belair, Maryland with a minor in SPLED. Maddie is a junior from the Scranton, PA area with minors in SPLED and RHS. Kenzie is a sophomore from the central Illinois area with minors in SPLED and RHS. We're so excited to create our puppets and see where the semester takes us!

Sew Far, Sew Good! (1/25/24 Hailey)

Today the Park Ave Puppets took on the challenge of making a pin cushion. After watching a 5 minute video and being given the smallest thread and needle possible, we attempted to get ourselves set up. Some challenges arose with threading the needles, hiding knots, getting a bit tangled, etc- but together we were all able to work through the struggles and we each got our pin cushions done. We persevered through the activity even though it was a bit tedious and frustrating. We now have a good idea of the skills we'll need to get our puppets made, with the hopefulness that we can all guide each other through the process!

We started with listing out a few ideas
Everyone was understanding of different options, while going trough pros and cons
Everyone was able to share their opinions
We were in between two ideas, family structure and language barrier!
We thought through what the skits would be for both of our options
All of us spoke on what we thought would be best and came to a agreement!
We decided on family structure because we are able to incorporate differences while involving inclusivity!
As a group we all communicated efficiently and made sure we were all in agreement

Week 5 (02/01/2024): AB/AR + Belonging Visual (Madeline)

While discussing AB/AR education and the importance of belonging within the classroom, we created a mind map visual. We discussed what it would look like if belonging doesn’t exist, what it looks like when we have it, the teacher’s role in creating belonging, and how we might connect the standards and domains we learned about into our puppet show. It was helpful for us to create the visual because it showed us in a tangible form some of the important factors contributing to AB/AR education and belonging. After the visual, we were able to make final decisions on how we plan to use the identity domain for our puppet show.

Today we watched a great video in class on what it means to feel like you belong in your classroom environment. Throughout the video, we kept notes on some key points that stuck with us the most!

In order to promote effective learning, it is the teacher's job to create an inclusive environment for the students where they feel not only seen, but also heard. This can be done through an AB/AR classroom environment. As teachers, we can include many resources like books and videos into the content to be used as windows to look into the lives of different people. Even more directly, we can create an inclusive environment by inviting our own students to share what makes us all special, reoccurring throughout the year in any lessons possible.

We also discussed what it means to have a collaborative classroom. Although teachers need to facilitate what goes on, it is crucial we incorporate student centered learning and give the students the ability to have a say and a voice in the classroom by making their own choices. This will lead to a stronger teacher student bond, and an increase in a desire to learn.

Creating Our Characters! (2/8/24 Kenzie)

Last week we came up with our initial ideas of who we want our puppets to be! We've created our characters for the puppet show and our persona dolls. On the top left is Madeline's puppet: Rowan. The top right is Gabby's puppet: Lila. The bottom left is Hailey-Rose's puppet and our teacher for our show: Mr. Monte. The bottom middle is Kenzie's puppet: Naomi. Finally the bottom right is Julia's puppet: Evan. We are so excited to see our puppets take form!!

It is starting to get real! Today we finally got to start making our puppets. After retrieving our materials from Joann's, we got to begin bringing our visions to life. We definitely bonded today, just chatting, tracing, cutting, and sewing. We were all helpful to one another and our puppets have become a collaborative effort. We can't wait to continue our construction process. We're excited to see these puppet personas come alive :)

Classroom Approaches (2/15/24 Julia)

Today in class we discussed different approaches to classroom environments that can be taken. As a group, we brainstormed two that resonated with us the most, and worked together to find the differences and similarities between the two. We chose both the Reggio Emilia and Relational Psychotherapeutic approach. What we found that they both had in common was the positive teacher to student relationship in order for learning to be successful. Although they are different in working one on one with students vs as the whole class environment, they both really prioritize that need for classroom and teacher that cares about the students emotional needs.

This led us into our discussion of which approaches we will want to choose in our own outline papers.

Working Together (2/22/24 Kenzie)

Today we started collaborating on our platform papers! Prior to class, we each created an initial draft for out platform papers. To start class we looked through each others' drafts and left comments. It's a great opportunity to share our thoughts and make our own papers better with the help from each other!!

Even with life stuff and sickness getting in the way, our group still manages to persist through and continue our projects. Collaboration and communication have been key while working through unfamiliar territory. We've begun drafting our script and are really excited to see our puppet show come together!

We are Family! (Julia 2/29/24)

Today we brainstormed some songs we could possibly use as the tune for the song in our puppet show! One of the ideas we liked was the song We are Family, to tie into our theme of different family structures. We thought this would be a cute song that we could change the lyrics to to fit to the message in our script, and maybe have each of the puppets sing a line to what their family structure looks like.

As a group we have all been working together to help one another when we approach questions. We navigate one another through the next steps which has been super help for each and every one of us! We are all on the right track and will be done our puppets soon. While we were sewing we came up with a song to use for our puppet show!

Today we made a lot of progress on both our puppet show script and our puppets themselves! We decided that it would be easier to have one person type out the script, but we all shared ideas for writing. While one person was typing, the rest of us worked on sewing our puppets. We took turns, switching between writing and sewing. Both our script and our puppets are starting to come together!!

Woohoo! The Park Ave Puppets are back from break! We missed each other! In the beginning of class, we did our discussions of our readings from this week. We discussed our thoughts on storytelling and deeply about Paley's readings. As we worked, some of us sewed while talking. After our discussion, some of us continued to sew while others began typing the script, but all of us collaboratively worked on writing the script. It was a class with a mix of everything that made it easy to transition coming back from break!

Mid-Semester Reflections happened today!

We added any questions for our platform paper #1's as we work on revising, thought about what is successful in our group and what we could work on. we also wrote about our padlets, reviewing our contributions and brainstorming what new multi-modal elements could be added into it. It was a great way to reflect, review, and improve as we enter the second half of the semester!

Gabriella Fuller - Group Progress

Tday we performed our first practice round of the puppet show. But prior to that we all worked together to help one another with sewing the hands, we gave each other advice and tips. It was very helpful and beneficial for furthering into the progress. Towards the end we cut out our skull templates and discussed what chnaged need to be made for the skit (we all need to work on the song). We already have planned out where we will be meeting for recording out puppet show!

First Script Run Through Complete! (3/21/24 Julia)

Today we ran through our script and song for the very first time!

It was very fun to watch our ideas and conversations about our topic come to life. After hearing our script out loud and feedback from the other groups, we are going to have an easier time going back through and making changes. We were happily surprised to hear that our script ended up being 6 minutes long!

Now that we have it down, all we need to do is go back and revise, practice our song as a group, and finish our puppets!

It is exciting to see it all come together. We had a discussion as a group about how we want our individual puppet family pages to look like. As of now we are going to "draw" the pictures on our pages to make them feel very personal and real.

This week in our readings, a quote that stuck out to us and was relevant to our groups' dynamic is "The children learn what it means to answer an open-ended question: there are no right or wrong answers, all ideas are accepted, valued, and appreciated and become a part of the learning process” (Ogu & Reynard Schmidt, 2009, p.13).

In this scenario, it's like we are the children. We're lucky to be an environment where we all feel free to share ideas without fear of judgement, and there have been many scenarios where we've talked through disagreements or different viewpoints or ideas. To reference the quote, we all feel "accepted, valued, and appreciated".

Today we made a list of our top 10 strategies/practices to incorporate into our platform papers. We had some major struggles differentiating between strategies and theories themselves. This class discussion definitely helped us work on differentiating between what a philosophy vs. a practice means. We're super excited to think more and build upon these practices in our papers!

This is Lila! Today was jhonestly the most difficult day because I could not get her dress to fit her. SO I decided to use my sewing skills to sew the sides and the back to make it fit more evenly. i also had to hot glue the top of the back of it to stay up. As for the hair I wanted her to have blonde hair up in a pony with a bow. I hot glued it to make the process go faster because the shirt already took up most of the time. I am going to add earring and possible a necklace on her!

Today I decided to time lapse my experience with Evan's hair. This was by FAR the most tedious work I have had to deal with when it comes to Evan's construction (you can tell by how focused and serious my face looks lol). These final touches really made him come to life though. I used some leftover googly eyes from Maddie, and yarn for his hair. I pulled apart each strand of yarn so his hair appeared slightly more fluffy. I can't believe he is already all put together, just needs the final finish of a shirt!
