1. What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic? -Abraham B

The poem's tone is that of a mystery. Emily uses words such as, "remains to see" and "hopeless to conceive". This creates an atmosphere of sadness and mystery. This poem is ironic, as Emily says that her life closed before it closed.

7. How important is the role of sound effects, such as rhyme and rhythm? How do they affect tone and meaning? -Abraham B

Rhyme and rhythm are important to the poem. They affect the poem in many ways due to adding tone. When we read, "It yet remains to see, If immortality unveil, A third event to me," we think of mystery. If this section of the poem didn't rhyme, then we wouldn't receive the full force of this atmosphere and meaning.

6. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The theme of this poem is about life and immortality. It shows us that there can be tragic events that occur in our life and we can move on from those times even when there can be more to come. When Emily Dickinson says that her "life closed twice" it is a metaphor for heartbreak as it is talking about two previous occasions when her "life closed" due to the deaths of her loved ones.

5. Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem?

Emily Dickinson's life "closing" symbolizes the end of something. When she says her life "closes" twice before it's "close," she is symbolizing, or referring, to two major events that have temporarily closed her life. These events are most likely other people's deaths which caused heartbreak, or in this case, her life to close. Another symbol in this poem is the mentioning of heaven and hell, they are both symbols of after life and immortality after death.
