While few women wore trousers in the 19th century, they were met with controversy and distaste from the general public. But as with many fashion trends, by the 1930's high society popularized women wearing pants casually.  I chose this trend over others because it holds more significance to me:  it was one of the signifiers for increased freedoms for women in the new century. Outside of our primary and secondary groups, the whole of our communities themselves appear "faceless". "People came to know one another by their jobs rather than by their kinship group or hometown. People looked on most others simply as strangers," (502). I chose this TedTalk by economist Nick Hanauer because it captures the essence of how our current conception of the capitalistic economy is a tool used to divide and conquer. Hanauer shares the realization that the concepts of the market we have been told to believe --like higher wages will lead to less jobs or value equals price-- are simply not true. Our culture encourages differences between one another and celebrates going against the crowd. "In a traditional society, such “shiftiness” marks a person as untrustworthy, but in a changing, modern society, the ability to fit in virtually anywhere—like a chameleon changing its colors to match its environment—is very useful," (505). Versatility and having many sides to you is seen as a positive characteristic. In the industrial age, American culture obsessed over materialism and people admired those who lived lavishly. However, as seen with super-activist Gen Z, society has turned towards more social issues and stress political correctness. "Postmodernity is also a postmaterialistic era in which issues such as social justice, the state of the natural environment, and animal rights command more and more public attention," (508). "The Dependency theory asserts that rich nations achieved their modernization at the expense of poor ones, by taking their valuable natural resources and exploiting their human labor exploitive cycle make it hard to uplift poorer communities when companies rely so heavily on their cheap labor," (509).
