Today’s Question: How can psychology help us understand what people mean when they think about the idea of God?

Today's RE lesson was discussion based.

Following a recap of last week’s lesson we discussed whether Christmas has become more of a non-religious than a religious celebration, and whether that matters to a) us and b) Christianity.

As a class, we recognised that many people - whether Christians or not - participate in both older traditions and modern celebrations despite not necessarily linking closely to incarnation. We also touched on how people - Christians in particular - might celebrate Christmas in ways that reflect the belief in a saviour bringing peace with God and good news for all people, e.g. helping at homeless shelters, Urban Outreach’s ‘Christmas Dinner on Jesus’ programme and even Farnworth and Kearsley Foodbank's efforts.

Following the main input, we explored the above question by reading the ‘messiah expectations’ sheet. We then went on to make wanted posters for a messiah.

Look at Y6's idea of God! This was a great activity to show how individuals - often from the same religion - have differing ideas of God.

Today we commemorated remembrance day by learning about it and creating poppies to put on a wreath.

We know that advent and Christmas is not about gifts and treats but recognise that sometimes it’s fun to participate in traditions outside of our own.

Today we thought about what kind of person Jesus was and worked together to list the characteristics/traits. We then thought about some bibles stories such as the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son and asked the question ‘what would Jesus do?’ in these scenarios.

Today, rather than writing in our books, we focussed on building our oracy by presenting our thoughts, findings and views on what Jesus would do.

Today’s question: Why do Christians think it is wise to follow Jesus’ teachings?

After clarifying the vocabulary for the lesson, we read a summary of Jesus’ (very long) sermon on the mount.

We then held two discussions in class.

1 - which of Jesus’ teaching would be easiest/hardest to follow.

2 - which is most important. As our opinions on this vary, we wrote down our individual ideas on the sticky note templates in our books.

Following our pre-unit assessment, we read Luke 24 as a class. As we did, we considered today’s question and highlighted the statements that might help us to answer it.

We then wrote down the three most important considerations in our opinions.

Today, following our class input, we looked at a variety of images depicting Easter celebrations in churches around the world.

Starting with a different image for each group, we wrote our questions about that image down. We then passed the paper on to the next group who research our questions and jotted down the answer to it before writing down their our questions. The cycle continued until we received our original!

After reviewing our previous learning about Good Friday and Easter Sunday, they class held table discussions about how Christians might feel around those times before compiling their ideas on a mind map.
