Teaching this theme in class, firstly I would introduce the learners to gender and what it means and how to differentiate between genders. By using a chart which displays different characteristics of a female and male. And assist them in identifying where gender stereotype has been used by playing a game in groups.

We are introduced to gender stereotypes and see how it is portrayed in the short story. Gender stereotype being the preconception or characteristics that ought to be possessed by either a female or male. An example of that in this short story is when the writer tells us she has worked her entire life, as females are not expected to be hard workers. Sophie being the female daughter is expected to be this sweet and shy girl but instead she is wild which can be seen as a male trait which shows gender inequality. Gender inequality is discrimination based on gender or sex. We later read in the story that the husband is expected to be the provider.

Here we find how language is displayed to show different gestures. Goody Two Shoes is about the Good Samaritan who takes her poor siblings out of poverty. We get to see how Margery uses language to express herself in a good manner and to show respect. Word choices, emphasis as well as how words are put together and punctuated in sentences which convey an attitude and tone. When the neighbours shouted “A witch, a witch, a witch” the atmosphere of the story changes. When conflicts arise the tone changes as well as linguistic features.

It is transmitted through language, material objects, rituals and art from one generation to another. “The Gentleman of the Jungle by Jomo Kenyatta” portrays a life of a man who is living in the jungle with animals. The short story exposes us to a custom where there is a king on the jungle. As we all expect the king of the jungle to be a lion. While we quote from the short story “The lion, who wanted to have peace and tranquillity in his kingdom”. It shows that the king values peace upon its kingdom as he is furious when both the elephant and his friend are having an argument. Furthermore, when conflicts arise in the jungle there are procedures that need to be followed.
