Welcome to my padlet page for The Road To Winter, Wilder Country and Land Of Fences. I'm loving the way Finn, Rose, Kas, Rowdy and the other characters are finding their way into readers' lives. This is a place where you can ask anything about the book - the characters, setting, plot points, why I wrote it or how some aspects of the virus seem to be coming true!. You can also ask bigger questions about the themes and ideas behind the story. Try to keep your questions brief and I'll get back to you as quickly as I can. I've left a couple of sample questions up from last year. NOTE: I'm not available to write your assignments for you, but I'm happy to give you some tips on how you might best approach them. Right, let's see what you've got!

Why do you title your books the way they are, and what effects the process of it, how do you go about doing it?

MILLIE

Thanks for your question Millie. The Road To Winter wasn't actually my working title for the first book. I simply called it Finn. But the publisher wanted something more catchy and they suggested TRTW. Only problem was, there was nothing about winter in the original draft - so I had to go back into the manuscript and write in the part about "winter is coming" and how it would protect the kids because the Wilders couldn't travel in the winter of storms. The other two titles Wilder Country & Land Of Fences were both my own!

How did you build tension in your stories?
CHARLOTTE

Good question! Tension is essential to good storytelling because it's what keeps the reader engaged. The art of building tension is to always have some underlying threat to your main characters. You don't always have to spell it out, but they have to be aware it is always there.
