When Montresor kills Fortunato he is filled with pride because he had finally bested the man who had insulted him in the beginning. Montresor had taken his insults hundreds of times but he was finally fed up so he vowed for revenge in the beginning of the story. In the first paragraph Montresor swears "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed for revenge"(Poe 1).

Fortunato's pride will not let him be bested by anyone. In the last paragraph Montresor thinks "I thrust a torch through the remaining aperture and let it fall within. There came forth in return only a jingling of bells"(Poe 95). This evidence shows that Fortunato had been killed by someone he trusted and portrays the betrayal he felt.
