Germany Invades Poland- 1939

Hitler was looking to regain lost territory in Poland, which goes against the treaty agreement, so the Allies declare war on Germany. This is the start of the war.

VE Day- 1945

Great Britain and United States celebrate a victory in Europe. German troops throughout Europe finally laid down their arms, the German surrender was realized in a final cease-fire. More surrender documents were signed in Berlin and in eastern Germany.

D- Day- 1944

It was clear that at some point in the war Germany was going to be defeated and the invasion of Normandy was that time. D-Day was the Allied invasion that allowed the Western Allies to attack, and with major help from Soviet pressure from the East, finally defeat Germany.

The Holocaust- 1933

While Hitler was leader of Germany he ordered Nazis to kill over 17 million people during the Holocaust. Hitler thought Jewish people were responsible for the lose of World War I and convinced a lot of people of this belief too, so he ordered a group of people called Nazis to murder them. The Holocaust is called one of the worst atrocities against humankind throughout history.

End of the War in the Pacific- 1945

Emperor Hirohito made a radio broadcast announcement that his country had surrendered ending World War II. The U.S. Bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki to make sure the war would end and to test out the new nuclear bomb.

Battle of Midway- 1942

About 6 months after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor Japan won many battles, but the U.S. finally had a victory during the Battle of Midway. The United States was able to push the Japanese back and make it so they could not recover well after the battle

Pearl Harbor- 1941

The Japanese held surprise attack on an American Navel Base at Pearl Harbor. This attack was a turning point for the United States and also for the war. The next day the U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a "Day of Infamy" speech, that same day America officially abandoned its policy of isolationism when congress declared war on Japan.

Potsdam Confrence- 1945

The Potsdam Conference was attended by the leaders of three nations including the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union. This conference was held in Potsdam, Germany so these leaders could negotiate significant terms after the end of World War II. The conference weasels made to figure out the ultimatum for Japan.

Neutrality Act- 1937

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the Neutrality Act to ban travel on belligerent ships, forbids the arming of American merchant ships trading with belligerents, and issues an arms embargo with warring nations. This act was there to show Americans wanted nothing to do with this upcoming war or any other war.

Hitler Becomes Chancellor- 1933

German President Hidenberg points Hitler as Chancellor. Putting Hitler in charge caused major casualties and started the war when he invaded Poland, making him the face of the start of the war.

Yalta Confrence- 1945

This conference brought together the heads of government of the U.S., U.K., and the Soviet Union. During the conference, the three leaders agreed to demand Germany’s unconditional surrender and began plans for a post-war world. Stalin also agreed to permit free elections in Eastern Europe and to enter the Asian war against Japan, for which he was promised the return of lands lost to Japan in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905.

Treaty of Versailles- 1919

One of the peace treaties made at the end of World War I. Making Germany sign agreements and responsible for the war. Germany had to give up territory and money as one of the agreements and went against them starting World War II.

League of Nations- 1920

Was an intergovernmental organisation, that was founded as a result of the Paris Peace Conference. This organization was made because they wanted to avoid another world war. Forming alliances of the nations to oversee the entity that would safegurd agaisnt another world war.

Nuremberg Trials- 1945

Nuremberg trials were carried out in Nuremberg, Germany with the intention of bringing Nazi war criminals to Justice. The defendants included German industrialists, high-ranking military officers, lawyers and Nazi party officials were indicted on various charges. The charges included crimes against humanity and crimes against peace. Although the legal justification and procedural innovation of the trials were controversial at that time, they are now regarded as a huge step toward the establishment of a lasting international court. They are also regarded as an important model for dealing with cases of genocide and other offenses against humanity.

Casablanca Conference- 1943

The point of the conference was to talk about the finalization of Allied strategic plans against the Axis powers in 1943. Plus the promulgation of the policy of “unconditional surrender.”

Hitler Declares War on U.S.- 1941

As Japans ally Germany had an obligation to Japan and help them fight who they wanted to fight, where in this case was America. So Hitler declared war on United States. The U.S. then gets involved in the war with the Allies and helps fight to win and end the war.

United Nations Charter- 1945

The United Nations was born after the war, as a means of better solving international conflict and negotiating peace, than was provided for by the old League of Nations. Two other important objectives described in the Charter were respecting the principles of equal rights and self-determination of all peoples. Plus international cooperation in solving economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian problems around the world.
