Something to remember about Culture and History is that they are very subjective. Rarely do you ever see history books written by the losers in a battle, all history is written by conquerors, and thus is skewed to make them seem like the 'good guys'. Some art amplifies this notion, while others portray generalizations of events and people. I believe that first hand art helps promote the awareness and understanding of various historical eras and cultures.

LT I agree that our perspective of history can be skewed and I think it's because the only way we can experience a history outside of our lifeime is through the perspective of someone else who was there. The use of art to communicate this can skew it more or it can provide us with details that the artist may not even realize are being conveyed.

I believe that when it comes to culture and history, art students should realize that there are many different cultures and ways of viewing history that are different from our own. Each artist creating work is bringing in their own unique cultural perspective, and through this the arts preserve cultures and history, even if they don't do so intentionally.

In response to JA about learning about our history through art. I agree, this is something that nothing else can really accomplish in the same way. However even it has limits. We have a tendency to filter those artifacts and artworks through a modern lens. What is acceptable now? What was acceptable then? Not only that, but the saying 'History is Written by the Winners'.
What happens to the art that is destroyed when places are conquered?

Culture can provide connections to social value, history, beliefs, religions and customs. It is also help people to identify each other and find a common grounds. Cultural heritage can provide a sense of unity and belonging within a group and allows us to better understand previous generations and the history of where we came from. Art existed just as long as human history, we can learn people, social value, history, and traditions through art work

I think this is something very much relatable to Alaska since the Alaskan Art is 75% of the art we see on a daily basis. As Alaskans we are exposed to the culture everywhere. And it's important for Alaskan NAtives to carry on their art and their history in this way of self and culture expression. And Art doesn't have to necessarily have some huge backstory to be important either. I think a lot of Alaskans don't necessarily understand or know the culture behind the Alaskan Native community but the art is everywhere and we all still very much appreciate it.

I agree that art and cultures should be respected. There's definitely a line when it comes to other cultures that aren't that of your own that must be respected in every aspect, art included. So I think it's so important to do your homework and maybe get the perspective of someone who actually is from that culture and can see more in your work than you might be able to.
