I reviewed my child assessment worksheet (child is in 1st grade) and I don't think environmental support would be a critical factor in solutions for this child, but slight modifications can help. He exhibits some mild signs of ADHD (I have not had him evaluated, thus far observed and documented behavior) so his ability to stay on task is not great. However, I am learning that he doesn't always get great sleep (bad dreams, mom works late, etc.) I think that has a lot to do with his ability to focus and stay on task. I do my best to remove environmental stimulants, arrange desks and tables to help him and the other students and give him the option of working at my table if he would like so that he can concentrate better (he usually chooses to do that). I have modified the environment the best I can to help him and am implementing other strategies to help him strengthen his "focus" skills and allow him to be successful each day.

I have reviewed my child's assessment worksheet from the beginning of the year and I don't think there are too many things that I could include from environmental support that I haven't already done. I have also just finished his spring assessment and he is doing amazing with is letter recognition. I have letters all over the classroom, and his favorite is each child's name they made on construction paper that is a border for our wall. At the beginning of the year until about two weeks ago he would not allow me to move his chair anywhere else during the day and had to sit on my right side. About a month ago I have noticed that "the light has came on" and he is getting stuff. He is using his words more, participating during small and whole group and loves pointing out letters he knows. Anyways he now has allowed me to move his chair to the other side of the table and straight across from me. This coming week I plan to move his chair again and see how he will react to possibly being at another table. During circle time I usually have him sitting right in front of me so that he isn't distracted and he has been doing so well participating when in front of me. I try to implement strategies as they arise and as we seem to need them and they sometimes work and others flop and gotta try other avenues.
Jessica Obrecht

After reviewing my child assessment worksheet for my child who is a preschooler, I don’t see where including environmental support would be helpful. The child that I am working with has a performance level that is average. She shows strengths throughout the daily schedule by following classroom expectations and is able to use her creative skills as well as her imagination during centers. While working on writing our letters, I have noticed the child wants to keep exploring words. She wants to write out her family members' names and does well when verbally spelling the names out to her. If she is having a hard time remembering what a word looks like, she goes back to her previous sheet or asks for help. She is not only interested in writing out names, she is wanting to write her numbers. We have been working with the number five the most because of how close it looks to an “S” which is the first letter in her name. She is definitely putting in the work and practicing on her own because she is showing growth with each interaction we share. A way that I can implement helpful literacy strategies is by creating a number strip and alphabet strip for her to use while writing. I believe this would be a helpful tool for her to look at for reassurance of each letter/number. I want to help her become comfortable with both letters/numbers for eliminating stress of literacy and numeracy.

After reviewing my child assessment worksheet I do think More environmental support and slight modifications to the classroom would be very helpful. The child I'm working with is nearly three years old and has developmental delays he shows signs of autism but has not yet been tested. the child is currently doing speech therapy and learning sign words with his hands. the child is not verbal but knows the following sign words: more, yes, no, all done, sleep, milk and food. We are currently working with him to learn more hand signs as ways of communication. the modifications to the classroom I think would be helpful would be putting sign words with the pictures on the wall. I would also like to put up pictures of different emotions so he can learn to identify what he is feeling. the parents are waiting until after his third birthday to get him tested but developmentally he is behind on communication and social skills.
