Against the wishes of Jupiter, Prometheus brings fire and other innovations to humans in an attempt to make them civilized. In a bout of rage, Jupiter gathers other powerful gods, creates a god named Pandora, and sends her down to Earth with a delivery. Athena warned Pandora never to open the box. With Pandora being extremely gifted, Prometheus welcomed her as his wife. Later, however, Pandora's curiosity got the better of her and she opened the box, releasing creatures of death, misfortune, and depression. This in turn punished Prometheus for his actions.

There are two main settings in this story--Olympus and Earth. This can be found in the text when the author describes the "Mighty Ones who lived upon the mountain top."(Paragraph 1, Baldwin) and later expands upon "the Lower World."(Paragraph 1, Baldwin) Jupiter's descriptions most often occurred on Mount Olympus, while Epimetheus and Prometheus's descriptions happened on Earth.

Theme

The main theme of "The Story of Prometheus and Pandora's Box" is to resist the urge of temptation for the greater good. This theme was developed and expanded upon through different characters, changes in setting, and the progression of the plot. All of these aspects can be seen in one moment of the story. "She opened the lid a very little, just to peep inside."(Paragraph 32, Baldwin) The character that embodies this theme is Pandora. Crafted by the gods, Pandora's main gift was curiosity. The change in setting happened when Panora was sent down from the gods to Earth in an attempt to punish prometheus, in turn furthering the theme. Lastly, the plot also played a role in the theme. This is because the chain of events in the story lead to that event, establishing the theme in the process.
