         <description><![CDATA[<div>It is common to read back into colonial times an understanding of slavery that is based on conditions that existed just prior to the civil war. There are many ways that slavery happened it did not only happen in america or the 13 colonies it happened in places over in europe, like Germany, Sweden, ad even Great Britain.&nbsp; It is also important to understand slavery as an historical institution that changed over time and differed from place to place. all of the big southern colonies chose to export labor-intensive crops like tobacco Virginia and Maryland and rice and indigo in South Carolina, all f these crops made the colonies very wealthy and prosperous but at the cost of many peoples freedom </div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Harriet Jacobs was born in 1813 in Edenton, North Carolina, to Delilah Horniblow. She  was enslaved by the Horniblow family who owned a local tavern. When Harriet Jacobs was six years old, her mother died. She lived with her who was the owners  daughter of the deceased tavern keeper. The daughter not only taught her how to sew, also to read and write.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Nat Turner was a slaved who was also a preacher who led the 4 day rebellion of enslaved and free black people in southampton county in Virginia in 1831. Nat Turner learned how to read and write at a young age. Nat Turner often preached the Bible to other enslaved people, he helped them realize that slavery was not right. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Def:A formal gathering of troops, especially for inspection, display, or exercise. Im guessing it means that they would muster troops in houses of colonists that would; there held against their rights. Most of the british troops would queter in peoples house that would be just normal colonists that would have their home taken over by a whole platoon of soldiers. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Insurrection</strong>: a violent uprising against an authority or government.</div><div>"NOT far from this time Nat Turner's insurrection broke out; and the news threw our town into great commotion."<br><strong>Scourge</strong>: a whip used as an instrument of punishment."Many women hid themselves in woods and swamps, to keep out of their way. If any of the husbands or fathers told of these outrages, they were tied up to the public whipping post, and cruelly scourged for telling lies about white men."<br><strong>Subservience</strong>: willingness to obey others unquestioningly."They exulted in such a chance to exercise a little brief authority, and show their subservience to the slaveholders"<br><strong>Consternation</strong>: feelings of anxiety or dismay, typically at something unexpected. "The consternation was universal. No two people that had the slightest tinge of color in their faces dared to be seen talking together."<br><strong>Malediction</strong>: "As they passed out of the gate, the captain turned back, and pronounced a malediction on the house." A magical word or phrase uttered with the intention of bringing about evil or destruction; a curse.<br><strong>Wrath:</strong>The wrath of the slaveholders was somewhat appeased by the capture of Nat Turner.extreme anger (chiefly used for humorous or rhetorical effect).</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Letters </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The letters in the narrative are found by the army that is searching the slaves houses. In there they find the letters. It was from other white people that asked them to be destroyed after being read. The soldiers stopped questioning since it was from white people and were okay with showing how segregated and how much the soldiers were okay with it since the letters were from other white people.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>
