Parents Influence on Moral Development

Moral development shapes the child’s decision-making process. His/her experiences from birth help to mold moral development. Therefore, the stems of morality are mainly from parents’ influence on children through their parenting practices, disciplinary strategies, and parenting styles. The hierarchical nature of parent-child relationships constrains children’s moral development.

A moral value is a science of the human soul, it is a mirror of one’s inward mind, one’s ethics. It inculcates values in mankind and value education which is one of the vital components needed from childhood. Every parent wants to raise their child with a strong sense of right and wrong. They even might want to start by cultivating their morality as well as empathy. Parents play a significant role in instilling the morals that we feel valuable. From honesty and respect to generosity and kindness, parenting techniques can help to shape the little one into a moral adult. The behavior of a parent is a powerful teacher for the child. Actions teach the child about moral values. It is easy to say but if we do not put these values into practice in day today’s life we cannot expect the child to learn.

It is during toddlerhood that most of the brain development takes place. So it is very important for children to be exposed to positive things during this time or they will live their whole life with a lack of self-confidence and an inability to make friends because they learn from a young age that other people cannot be trusted.

It is also very important for parents to understand how much influence they have on their child’s life. If you want your child to be respectful, you should always treat them respectfully and do the same when they are grown up. You should also try to find activities that both of you can enjoy doing together so your child understands that family time also counts as a very important activity in its life.

1. Justice
Parents set standards for right and wrong behaviour that are enforced through positive reinforcement and punishment. Positive reinforcement is a reward for excellent behaviour that teaches youngsters that certain acts are preferred over others. Punishment, on the other hand, helps to stop children from engaging in negative behaviours and teaches children from a young age that their choices have consequences. This approach also assists youngsters in making judgements about how to act when they begin to evaluate the consequences of their actions.

2. Fairness
One of the most important moral teachings that children learn in their families is the concept of fairness. Parents define the distribution of resources, such as food and living space, and grant varied privileges to members based on age, gender, and work. The way a family decides what is fair effects children's formation of beliefs about rights and entitlements, as well as their concepts of sharing, reciprocity, and respect.

3. Social Roles
Children in the home environment learn to analyze their acts not only in terms of fairness but also of emotional needs. Children learn the importance of social support from their families and develop motives that are focused on kindness, generosity, and empathy rather than solely on own needs and desires. Children develop concern for society as a whole by learning to care for the interests and well-being of their family.

According to Kohlberg, family engagement is not necessary for moral development, implying that parents have a comparatively lesser association with a child's level of moral reasoning than the environment. He said that children learn about moral rights deeper by observing and imitating their peers about action's repercussions. Therefore, it is said that parents to have less consequence on children's moral reasoning. Nonetheless, parents continue to play an essential role in their children's moral thinking. Adolescence is a vital phase for moral and developmental maturity, and the majority of teenagers in this stage spend the most of their time with their families. Their development is largely determined by their guardian.

6 years ago, 8 teenagers on their basikal lajak met their demise in a fatal road accident. The driver who hit them, Sim Ke Ting, in her defence stated that she did not see the group of cyclists at the material time.

It was a six-year journey that was filled with pain. Pain when the families of eight children found out they had been killed.

Pain when the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash found out she had caused their deaths. Pain every single day since then.

Tears must have been shed copiously during those six years. Understandably, the parents wanted justice, but would there have been justice if Sam Ke Ting was found guilty of causing the children's deaths?

The Court of Appeal did not think so, overturning the Johor Baru High Court's guilty verdict and sentence of six years' jail and a fine.

The reasoning, for the most part, was that the basikal lajak cyclists should not have been there in the first place, putting themselves and motorists in danger, and in the wee hours of the morning to boot.

Hence, the charges against Sam, the three-member bench ruled unanimously, were flawed and therefore illegal.

In the course of the six years of court proceedings, there were many who put their two sen worth out there.

There were those against Sam, who wanted her behind bars. There were those who pitied her and wanted her freed of the charge.

There were those who blamed the parents of the whole group and wanted them punished for negligence.

This theme of negligence crops up a lot these days.

The laws are such that parents of children can be charged with negligence should these young ones end up injured or killed, or cause harm to others.

Just before we learned of the decision in Sam's case, the mother of a child who had shot a teacher in Virginia, the United States, was charged with negligence and failing to secure her firearm.

In Gombak, in January, the parents of two children, whom they had left alone at home, were probed for negligence after the 9-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother were killed in a fire.

Was it, however, negligence in the case of these cyclists? How many times have we heard of children sneaking out of their homes in the middle of the night?

How many of us did it when we were younger? It may not occur as often as, say, in the US, but it does happen here.

As the parents of one of the children who died in the incident put it, which parent would want their child to sneak off in the wee hours of the morning and go riding on a main road?

The parents of those who died will know the love and embrace of their children no longer.

They will forever wonder what they could have done to prevent the crash from happening.

They will grieve till their last breath, as no parent can forget a child lost, even if they accept it as fate.

Sam, meanwhile, will forever remember that she was involved in so horrible an incident. She may not have been at fault, as the courts have ruled, but she will always relive those moments and there are likely going to be times when she doubts herself, wondering what she could have done to prevent it from happening.

What we need to do is move on. What we need is to allow everyone to recover, as much as humanly possible.

More importantly, however, is what lessons we learn from this whole episode.

Parents need to be extremely aware of what their children, or anyone under your guardianship, for that matter, are doing. They need to know what sort of company they keep.

One important thing, perhaps, is building a relationship with your children. You do not have to be your children's best friend. Discipline is important and putting your foot down is crucial. But what is important is to be that someone to whom your children can turn in any situation.

That is the easiest way of keeping yourself in the know when it comes to what your kids are doing.

Different family have a different parenting styles. The parents usually know their childrens better than others. So the parents should know what is the best for their children's moral development. If the parents have more than 2 child, they have to be justice. Set the suitable punishment and reward so that they can know and learn what is wrong and maintain what is right and good for them.

Parent also should be fair to their children. Especially in term of love and care. Parent should not differentiate their children. Some parents diffirentiate their children because the young children is more clever than the brother. It will affect children moral development if this problem continue.

Emotional support of the children from their parents is also important as social roles. Sometimes, our kids feel like people are judging him / her because of their appearance etc. So as a parents, it is important to hold the social roles to fulfill the needs of the children.

In Conclusion, it is clear that moral development of a children is influence by the parents. So, the 3 factors of influence which are justice, fairness and social roles is important to determined children's moral development.
