In order to tackle this situation, we have decided that we would ask the student (Milly) to explain how the cell phone is being used in a productive manner. If she is able to give a reasonable explanation to why it could be useful, we would then ask her to explain why her paper is blank if the cell phone is being used productively.

-How is this device being used in a productive manner?
-Well, the cell phone allows me to (insert arbitrary reasonable explanation as to why cell phone will help)
-If the cell phone does help you with (repeat arbitrary explanation back to student), then why is it hindering your production for the current task?

1. Talk about how the device is being used (is it being used academically or socially?)

2. Ask student to put phone in basket if they get caught twice being off task (first time is warning; student can retrieve phone at the end of the class period)

3. Phone can be used if student is finished with worksheet and they have attempted all the questions until the class is ready to move on.

Cell Phone- Remind Milly that even though the school is BYOD, these devices need to be used as directed. Then ask Milly to put the cell phone away and focus on the work she is doing in class. If this happens a third time, consider taking the cell phone away if that coincides with the school policy. We should then let the guardians and administration know if we took the cell phone away and that the cell phone usage was becoming an issue.

Cheating- Conversation with both students separately with no bias to try and determine what happened. Call both sets of guardians and inform them of the situation without giving specifics. Refer to school policy if one of the students admits to cheating. If both still deny, then administer the assessment again to them while they are apart. Based on school policy, consider reporting the suspected cheating to administration.

Scenario 1:
If we are using a device in class: First ask if she is using the device for math and not personal use, then ask her why she is hiding it if she says she is using it for math.

If we are not using a device in class: First ask if she is actually using it for math, and if she says yes remind her that we are not currently using devices for this assignment/task/work.

For both, make sure to ask her what seems to be confusing her now, help her work through it, then offer extra help during tutoring/in school time (comet time)/after-school.

Also try to ask her if anything is bothering her that may be keeping her from being able to concentrate in class.
